Mekeal was much more favored by Withen. Van was also kept in the servant's wing while all his brothers and cousins, despite some being younger than him, were in the Bachelor's Hall. IMO, the "elsewhere" described in the passage was the physical, mental, and emotional removal of Van from Withen's life, basically Withen's attempt to forget the fact that Van even existed. alright, i'm not saying this as well as i wanted, but i guess that will do. now i have a question as to the Order of Unsung Heroes. what are the boundaries set on the characters you can champion? at first i thought that they couldnt be major characters, but thats wrong. can they just not be the central character of a trilogy? or can they be anyone, as long as they're not talked about/praised very much? also, can more than one person champion the same character? and is there a list of who has championed which characters? ok, i think thats all of them *g*, thanx. oh, one more question- what is the exact meaning of zhai'helleva? That means you may not champion Vanyel, Tylendel, Tarma, Kethry, Kero, Talia, Elspeth, Firesong, Karal, Skandranon, Eric, Korendil, Beth, Tannim, or Di Tregarde. The point of the Order is, after all, to advocate *unsung* heroes, not heroes who already have Orders of rabid fans. Secondary and bit characters are a better bet (though I do champion Tal Rufen and Maclyn; neither of them get a lot of air time on the list. Nobody'd kick up much of a fuss if you wanted to champion, say, Shana from The Elvenbane.). I *think,* though I am not certain, that there is a list of who champions who on the Order's webpage, but damned if I know where that is. I do not believe there are any rules against championing a character who is already championed by someone else. <> The exact meaning is 'Wind to thy wings'. Did Vanyel do it, or the Companions, or something else? It was done by Vanyel, Stefan, the Companions and the Bards. I'm doing this all from memory so if I mix something up let me know, just use text ev so I don't have to go digging trying to prove you wrong - it's my worst fault ;-) Step 1 - Stefan and the other Bards attempting to get the population of Valdemar to believe that the "plain" Heralds are every bit as good as the Herald Mages. This was the task given to him by Vanyel as what he must accomplish before he could join with Van in Sorrows (last chapter of Price) Step 2 - Once they were back together van put a spell of coercion on Valdemar as a whole. This is discussed twice in WoF. First when the group meets Stef and Van in Sorrows and Van is telling him about how the Vrondii work. Elspeth states that that doesn't explain why no one can even think of Magic and Stef then appears and says that was the two of them together. Then when Darkwind is explaining coercion spells to the Council he tells them they've been under one for years. Step 3 - The Companions use their power to stop people (not just their Chosen) from thinking about it. Gwenna lets the cat out of the bag during Darkwinds speech telling Elspeth that Van had a lot of Companions to help him keep Magic a hidden resource. It's also seen when Kero tries to tell Eldan that Companions are "spirits" and can't get the word out, she is forced to say "special". > Second, why don't the Companions just fess up about what they can do? > Sometimes their hiding secrets gets everyone in trouble. Also if the Heralds > knew what they could do, wouldn't it be easier to keep the kingdom safe? If the Heralds knew everything that their Companions could do they would lean on them far too often, probably expecting to be bailed out of many situations that they could otherwise handle. I think Dirk says something about this in Arrows Fall. How come Rolan could make > her understand words at one time and not another? In Orientation it is explained that at the moment of Choosing a Companion will always speak to the Chosen even if they never do it again. It is difficult for some of them to speak to those who don't have the gift. In Storm Breaking Florian explains that it's difficult after Rolan mind speaks to a mixed bag of gifted and non-gifted. Yfandes speaks to Stef saying it's something they don't like people to know they can do. Sayvil indiscriminately speaks to any gifted she chooses. I think that it is very difficult for even a grove born to peak to someone who is mind blocked, but that they can speak to any gifted they want but don't like to advertise the fact. > The second question I have is regarding instances in > the series that talk about Companions choosing (rather > than Choosing) heralds in a sort of preparation for > their true Companions. I didn't think > that Floria and Karal (sorry for the name mistakes, I > told you I don't have the books) are examples of this > because that was a special circumstance, but maybe it > was. The only time I've seen this was with Jisa. Yfandes said she would be Chosen without developing a bond if it became absolutely necessary (i.e. if she really needed Herald training) and then she would be Chosen by Taver, but I don't think she was actually Chosen until after her mother's death. Karal was not Chosen at all he was simply given a guide. He did however, I would say, develop a "bond" with Florian when he let him into his mind fully (beginning of Rising). However, the Goddess of Nomenclature has chosen not to appoint another Avatar to act in her absence. Because of this, the official Pantheon is currently closed. I will not be performing any Naming ceremonies until after I have finished my Ph.D. dissertation (propably no earlier than November). The NewbieFest and the Pantheon pages will be updated to reflect this change. Basically, this means that if you are not already officially Named, you will not be Named in the near future. If you absolutely have to have a divine title, you might want to approach an existing deity about becoming an Avatar, a Priest or Priestess, or some similar title (these titles are granted by the deity, not by me or Thessaly).
