So, here's my question. > > Has anyone found anything in the fantasy genre that doesn't completely > pale in comparison with Misty's genius at character development and world > construction? I post this to the list because I figure everyone could use a good recommendation (IMHO) now and again (Misty just doesn't put 'em out fast enough!! _Still_ waiting for "Elvenbred" and "Elvenborn" to come out!) I would personally recommend Diana Paxon: Series: Children of woden [oden?]: book 1 "The Wolf and the Raven" book 2 "The Dragons of the Rhine" book 3 "The Lord of Horses" I will say now that this is a History-fantasy, and when I originally bought "The Wolf and the Raven" I didn't realize it, but with her style of writing and the 'fantasy' part of story makes it absolutely stunning. I read the first two books in 2 days total. The third book I still haven't finished (been what, a year now?) because I usually delay finishing a book when I just _KNOW_ something bad is about to happen to one of the characters I like in a book (I hate reading about people dying/permanent deformations/loss of everything/etc). I would recommend this to anyone who likes misty, and really the 'history' part is a moot point anyway. It feels like a full-blooded fantasy when you're reading it. The only problem I would forsee would be availability. These books (all three of them together at least) are difficult to find. She hasn't written much, and isn't one of the well-known fantasy authors so stores don't keep her books in stock (unfortunately!) like they do others. She's published, as well as Misty, in many of the Sword & Sorceress anthologies, and in fact, the most recent one (16?) included a Diana Paxon story. I would have to say that I find it odd that a writer with such talent as Diana Paxon is so unknown in the fantasy community. Well, Marion Zimmer Bradley wouldn't think so at least (said as much in S&S 16). Hehe, okay, I'll stop now. OBMisty: I really did like "OwlSight" a lot; It did a lot of character development that her previous books never went into as much detail about. I can't wait till the last one, "OwlKnight" comes out (when was that again?). And _ARE_ they ever going to finish the Elven-thingy series with "ElvenBred" and "ElvenBorn"? I really liked the first two "ElvenBane" and "ElvenBlood" and have been dying to read more since, but they're taking _forever_! ugh! *frustration!* *fume* I feel better now. ^_^ <<--Ryoko-->> (a newbie to the list, but an ancient to reading misty) |||Titles: Toroki no Miko|| Duo no Miko|| Nataku no Miko||| ||http://ryoko.gt.ed.net||Ryoko's Anime Multimedia shrine|| ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 12:59:56 -0400 (EDT) From: She Who Cares Not For Xenopus Embryos To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Recommendations for good Misty-type author Message-ID: On Fri, 2 Jul 1999, Alison Heath wrote: > Has anyone found anything in the fantasy genre that doesn't completely > pale in comparison with Misty's genius at character development and world > construction? Actually, much as I love the early works by Misty, I have to say that I think that there are any number of authors who are ever so much better than her later work. Here are some of my recommendations: Guy Gavriel Kay: start with the Fionavar Tapestry and then read his stand-alone books. He's so far beyond brilliant that there is no way to describe it. Patricia Wrede's Lyra books are excellent. I beleive that the first three have been released in an omnibus edition called Shadows of Lyra, or some such. Her Regency magical adventures featuring Mairelon the Mage and his side-kick Kim(?) are also fabu. If you like the Di Tregarde stuff, try out the Anita Blake adventures by Laurell K. Hamilton. If nothing else, they feature the sexiest men in the entire occult fantasy genre (oooooo, Jean-Claude! mmmmmmmmm, Richard!) Another investigator with a vampire side-kick is Tanya Huff's Victoria Nelson, who is found in the Blood series. Excellent stuff. Urban magic, I'm less good at since it's not really my cup of tea. But you might want to try Jack of Kinrowan by Charles de Lint. And Thomas Deitz has the most original character-driven faerie/reality crossover series ever written (in my opinion): The Tales of David Sullivan. Oh, and I just remembered, Tanya Huff has a very fun little stand-alone book called "Summon the Keeper" which is very Di Tregarde-ish (plus, the cat is a stitch!) Oh, and just because, look for Shadow, by Anne Logston. =) May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ken.html ------------------------------ Date: 2 Jul 99 12:45 EDT From: Adrianne.Cook-+AT+-wiley.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: book recommendations & karsite captain Message-ID: <377d0c6dRe: book recommendations & karsite captain*-+AT+-m400gw.wiley.com> oooo! book recommendations! happy, happy, joy, joy (wrong site?) alison wrote: Has anyone found anything in the fantasy genre that doesn't completely pale in comparison with Misty's genius at character development and world construction? try marion zimmer bradley's darkover series (misty cowrote rediscovery) have you read the elven books by misty & andre norton? there's only two so far (elvenbane & elvenblood), but a third should be coming (soon, please!) c.j. cherryh -- mostly "hard" science, but she also does some fantasy (morigane cycle, russian folklore). she does incredible stuff w/ aliens, that is: humans are the aliens (pride of chanur is a classic; also the foreigner series). any questions about cloning? try cyteen (unashamed to plug) robert jordan's wheel of time series (eight books & counting -- incredibly complex, if you like that kinda stuff) tanya huff & laurell k. hamilton do fun & funny supernatural characters -- look for all of the "blood" books by huff & "anita blake" by hamilton. the blood books don't necessarily have to be read in order, but i heartily recommend that you read the anita books in order (#1 is guilty pleasures). i admit, i also have your problem -- the authors i like don't write fast enough! or maybe, i read too fast? ob misty ---> ummm, lemme think ... sorry guys, the story i'm referring to about the kariste captain in sword of ice is *not* stolen silver *or* about herald rubrick getting injured. this is an entirely different story involving (trying not to spoil) a karsite officer (captain, i think), his grandfather, and a herald. the herald asks the officer a number of difficult questions, causing him to rethink his positions on several issues. there. hope this doesn't spoil. can't really think of anything else. i'd like to see a story (short?) about the ashkevrons & shin'a'in horse breeders --- i think it would be rather amusing to see them comparing notes. if anyone else is familiar w/ mzb's darkover, i'd also like to see a book of misty's short velgarth stories or novelettes -- she could probably answer lots of our questions there. :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jul 1999 20:43:07 +0100 From: "Alexia/Sabrina" To: Subject: Fantasy Writer Recommendations Message-ID: <076001bec4c3$8cfb5160$47c928c3-+AT+-oemcomputer> ¤Silve¤ reccommended Diana Wynne Jones as another good fantasy writer. Well lets see I love Emma Bull. she wrote "Finder" which is a book about contemporary elves. It is a bit techno punk as well. this book and a few others are about the Borderlands. Will Shatterly (spelling ) also wrote a book with Emma Bull as well as one on his own. I have no idea what the title is. They have also written a lot of techno punk Sci-Fi I love there work but they don't write much. They are Also musicians as well. I have got to get a hold of some of their music. Of all the reccomended I've tried, I think that the only one that I HAVEN'T liked was Guy Gavriel Kay. *DUCKS!* Sorry, but I just cant get into his books and end up putting them down about half-way through. Simon R. Green: His book Blood and Honor and the ones written in that universe are just plain fun I'm not a huge fan of his Deathstalker science fiction series though. He does have a new book out called Swords of the Haven which looks like he may have gone back to his fantasy stories again. Christopher Moore: He writes sort of an urban fantasy that is just hilarious his new book The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove (bad title, great book) left me rolling in the isles. Blood Sucking Fiends is good too. Elizabeth Kerner: She only has one book out that I know of but it is worth tracking down its called Song in the Silence and it puts a whole new spin on dragons...just wonderful I can't wait for the next book Melissa Michaels: Cold Iron and My Sister the Rain. This is an urban fantasy series sort of like Bedlam's Bard but with less magic. They are different but really good, they are sort of a murder mystery type like the Di Tregarde stuff too Terry Prachett and Neil Gaiman: Good Omens-one of my all time favorite book how can you not like a book that makes fun of Armageddon? Tanya Huff: she's been mentioned before but my favorite book of hers has not been mentioned I love the Fire's Stone its just a really good story Judith Tarr: she writes historical fantasy her best series is The Hound and the Falcon which deals with an elf during the time of the Crusades but all of her books tend to be wonderful I also really like her books about Egypt-The Lord of Two Lands deals with Alexander the Great and Throne of Isis is about Cleopatra are the best P.N. Elrod: I'm not a fan of her blood series, but I love the Johnathan Barrett Vampire series. Well written with good characters Its set during the American Revolution with the main character becoming a vampire and moving to England. Anne McCaffrey: How can you not love her, she's the Dragon Lady I love her Pern books and the Rowan/Damia series...although the Tower and the Hive was her weakest book by far. I also liked the Freedom and the Ship Who books. Then I found out that the Miller brothers have written books that tell all about the characters you barely glimpse in the games, and all about the world of D'ni and anyway, its really kewl, and once I read the first one, I had to buy all three of them and am currently in a really bad state since I loaned out my fav. Myst book AND I have read 1 and 3 (what can I say I got impatient) in the Mage Winds series and can't find the 2nd!!! I'm not the fantasy expert, but I really love the characters in these books, although I think Misty is better with word choice and dialouge. But I totally reccomend Rand and Robyn Miller's 3 Myst Books: The Book of Atrus, The Book of Ti'anna (my fav), and The Book of D'ni. I am totally running to Barnes and Noble ( I find taht my library does not carry a lot of fantasy) and checking out some of the authors you guys mentioned in those twenty some posts!! And maybe, JUST MAYBE they will have Winds of Change!!!!!!!!!!! Before I go insane please God, pretty please! Zhai'helleva! Firestorm (BTW on a post I just sent in 10 min ago, I put Firesong, I meant Firestorm, Its just that I've been reading Winds of Fury again and it kinda slipped and I didn't notice untill after I sent it! Sorry!) It is about the life of Angharad (sp?) who is a little too curious and disobeys the teachings of a lifetime to go into a tower and open a chest. She releases 7 demons and is punished with immortality until she has defeated all of the demons. The books in the series were written and should be read in the following order: Nemesis, Inferno, Infanta, Nocturne, Troika, Avatar, Revenant, and Aisling. LC has also written the Time-Master Trilogy (The Initiate, The Outcast, and The Master), Star Ascendant (Prequel to the Time-Master Trilogy), and the Chaos-Gate Trilogy (The Deceiver, The Pretender, and The Avenger). If you like cats, Gayle Greeno's books of the Ghatti's Tale are also good: Finders Seekers, Mind-Speaker's Call, and Exile's Return. If you like vampires, P.N. Elrod's Vampire Files and Jonathan Barret, Gentleman Vampire series are wonderful.. I'm sorry I don't remember what the first one is titled and I am too lazy to go get them out of my room. I really enjoyed "Sacred Ground" and would love to be able to read a sequel. Does anyone know if ML has any plans for one. Sheep-shaped baked alaskas for everyone. Jadzia, who's going to see Wild Wild West tomorrow and hopes she won't be as dissapointed in this as she has been in almost every other movie based on a favorite television series. (Why do I still bother hoping for a miracle?) _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Does anyone else out there think FX is the coolest minor character in the serrated edge series? I hope he's in Tempest Fugit. sorry about the short post...i love helping people find new things to read, it's one of the few excuses i use for comming back from the dreaded lands of lurkdom. Many thanks to all the listsibs who have been very considerate and have not breathed a word about the plot. I am unable to contribute much in the way of authors. There are few fantasy books in the library and my book purchases have to be very selective. A book I enjoyed a lot is _Tam_Lin_ by Pamela Dean. This is part of the Fairy Tale Series, and while I haven't read any of the others, I am extremely curious about them. Guidebook to Velgarth? Hear, hear! And any Velgarth maps in color that are large enough to stick on walls. LOVE maps. OBMisty: Does anyone have an answer/opinion regarding the timing of Talia's running away and Rolan showing up? I was wondering if her declaration of her desire to be a Herald had anything to do with his Choosing her.
