Is the Kitsune in the book like the mythological > kitsune? > I dunno how the Japanese version of the fox-spirit is; but I DO know how the Chinese version is, and it's not much like the Kitsunes in the book. The fox-spirits are not really spirits, more of a spirit-demon. There are two kinds. The beniegn one which is a human reincarnated into a fox-form because they screwed up in thier last life; in which case they will run around seeking enlightenment & that sort of niceness. The other, more likely, are evil little wenches/bastards/etc. These are true foxes who have lived over 100,000 years (errr, I THINK that's the right number...) and gained powers including shape-shifting, ie, to become human. Females will take the form of beautiful women and lead men to thier doom, males are magicians (actually ALL of these spirit-demons are capable of magic; the females just prefer obfuscation and letting the foolish human do her work) who through deciet and various other nastiness also cause the downfall of humans everwhere they can, of course, before the wonderful & powerful heroes take them down. ::grin:: a *little* different from Misty's version... however, I must admit, while China & Japan are very close geologically, perhaps thier folk-lores are different. ::shrug:: > Ellevaranachai Shay'Nara'Val > Herald Trainee, but Bard wannabe => > Rethwellan by Nature, Chosen by Virtue > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Emily > To: > Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 1999 3:46 PM > Subject: Re: So everyone has not been receiving? > > > Also, going back a few days, before the e-mail quit coming, several > people > > > have asked about other fantasy authors. I love Jane Yolen's book Briar Rose that was Sleeping Beauty and the Holocaust all together. I had sworn never to read another war book again, but that one was very very good. Also, a question. I posted a message a while back that had the Austin Powers/Bedlam's bard connection, but I never got it back. Did anyone else get this message, or do I have to re-send it? Honestly, I've only ever seen a benign reference to a kitsune once in an authentic Japanese story. Almost every Japanese reference has been to the typical malevolent kitsune. However, Misty might be going by the (fairly common) modern American re-interpretation of a kitsune (or Chinese fox spirit). They seem to be very common these days, and are almost always benign (although they are rarely reincarnated humans). So, perhaps Misty just assumed that since everyone seems to write about benign kitsune, that they must really be that way. Well, for myself, I enjoyed the world that Black Gryphon was set in, with the high abilities for magic, as if it were something used completely in every-day life. I also enjoyed the culture that was around it, and the differences in the politics (okay, yes, Urtho's Tower was cool... *g*). It was better for me, imo, to learn of that world as separate completely from the others because it let me appreciate it without knowing how it all was going to end up. Also, the answers that I had in regards to where people ended up was nice, too. What I would like to see at some point would be further talk of the old world that Urtho lived in, and how that all came about. This, of course, would be after those sci-fi books *grin*. And in the second half of Bedlam's Bard (I forget the title) the people at Dublin Labs had Project Posidon with the earthquakes?
