MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2030 Topics covered in this issue include: 1) BG music (LHM+), Grey & Grey's Ghost, spoiler spacing, and, yes, I'm back by "Nelson Greenslade" 2) Braid: I'm back!/Age for Misty/Companions & Heralds/etc... by "Li'nia Stormdancer" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 17:56:19 -0300 From: "Nelson Greenslade" To: "Misty" Subject: BG music (LHM+), Grey & Grey's Ghost, spoiler spacing, and, yes, I'm back Message-ID: <04d501bed617$b4d4f640$LocalHost-+AT+-nbnet.nb.ca> ***intro fluff*** There is heard an anguished wail, followed immediately by a large puff of smoke as Elsa appears. "Waaahhhhhhh!!!!! My mother deleted all of my mail from the List!! ALL of it!!! Stuff I hadn't read!! Stuff I'd saved from long ago!!!" She sits on a sleeping sheep and cries. "It's not fair! I was too sick to use the computer - those poor letters had no hope of defending themselves! -- well, at least everyone's been prolific since..." ***end*** I finally got Werehunter!!! I love it, I do! Yep yep yep. This is a recommendation for the aforementioned anthology of Misty's short stories if you didn't know. Lady Starlight suggested a 'background/soundtrack' thread. Well, I've just been listening to Shadow Stalker too much of late to think of anything else just now, but I'll try to get to it later (once I've returned the CD to a certain oh-so-subversive destroyer-of-gates... I really ~didn't~ like Heather Alexander's voice before... *sigh*). What I can say on a related topic is that when I listen to the filk music, I find myself picturing music-video-esque scenes. Not so much with the songs relating events I read in the books; I get the strongest images with "Hawkbrother" (a.k.a. Moondance's song *sniff*). But "Earth Spirit" still baffles me, somewhat. Does anyone know all the words to that? Daystar wrote: <> It's not just you. Elspeth is a little mean to Gwena at times, but, to be fair, Gwena wasn't 100% honest with her Chosen all the time, so maybe she deserved some of that. Don't roast me for saying this, but IMO they were both brats. Lady Brynn wrote: <> I devoured that book, and I even got most of the jokes thanks to Mom's Aussie friend having just visited! I recommend it (there are LOTS of sheep), and in fact most of his books. This author's books are usually hysterically funny and often very profound. And as soon as Katie (Mighty Supplier of Books)'s mother is done with it, I plan to read Good Omens, by Pratchett and the guy who wrote the Sandman series. (I can pronounce his last name, but I cannot spell it! --_--) Becky wrote: <<"You look like an angel,/ Walk like an angel,/ Talk like an angel,/ But I got wise/ You're the devil in disguise" as Jean-Claude's theme>> This of course puts me in mind of the song "You Must Be An Angel" from the Madonna album "Like A Virgin", which in turn made me look to "True Blue", another album of Madonna songs, from '86. "Papa Don't Preach" -- (just the name reminds me of Vanyel) "Papa I know you're going to be upset" ; "Papa don't preach / I'm in trouble deep / Papa don't preach / I've been losing sleep" ; "Daddy, daddy, if you could only see / just how good he's been treating me / You'd give us your blessing right now / 'Cause we are in love" "Open You Heart" -- (Stefen to Van) "If you gave me half a chance you'd see / My desire burning inside of me / But you choose to look the other way / Well, I've got something to say / I've had to work much harder than this / For something I want / Don't try to resist me / Open your heart to me" "Live To Tell" -- (I get the distinct impression that I can apply this to more than one book, but I can't think of any specifics, so I won't bother with the words) "Stolen Child" -- (For Tannim's Seleigh friends; written by W. B. Yeats, set to music by Loreena McKennitt in her "Elemental" album) Chorus: "Come away oh human child / To the waters and the wild / With a faery hand in hand / For the world's more full of weeping / Than you can understand" "Come On In" -- (*g* Anyone remember that cartoon, "JEM"? Well, here's one of the show's songs that could work for ANY life-bonded couple, I think) "Something big's been waiting to happen / Ever since you and I met / But if we wanna make it happen / We gotta let our feet get wet" ; "Come on in, the water's fine / Take the plunge, it feels divine" See? I said I'd get around to it later... Wintershard wrote: <> ME!!!! Well, she has written sci-fi, and I like what I've read!! Suzi asked: <> I do. I think that if she continued to write about Nan, Susan, Grey, etc., she'd probably take some flack along the lines of "You're copying 'The Little Princess' ", but it's not really the same story at all, so Feh! I say to them. *collapses in shuddering convulsions, belatedly, for having to mention something related to ...Shirley Temple (The Horror!!)* I saw sheep when I went to P.E.I. 2 days ago!!!! Yayyy!!!!! Stormlight wrote: <> AFAIK, will-o-the-wisps started out in folklore as being very dangerous indeed, and then modern convention turned them benign. "Little bobbing lights in the woods -- how could that be harmful?" Harmful enough when they lead you off a bloody cliff, the little buggers... *grumble mutter* Ambermoon wrote: <> I most heartily add my voice to this (I ~liked~ the Tregarde books; it's most vexing that there won't be any more *growls*), and I also add an emphatic " -- and darn those loonies who can't tell players from characters in AD&D!!!" with a shrieking echo of "Stop stalking my friend, you twit!" *sigh* Poor Misty. It must be awful to have your creative flow thwarted because some nutcase decides to replace reality with one of your book-settings. On the subject of spoiler spaces, I have a few comments to toss in --> #1 I generally go by what the NewbieFest says needs to have spoiler spaces, and thus only put them for new books. However, I will typically put the title of the book or series in my subject space, so READ SUBJECTS. If you don't, well, you're robbing yourself of fair warning and can't call 'foul', since the subject space is there to tell you what the letter is about. (and I ~am~ working at using it correctly!) #2 There is no point in putting spoiler spaces after the spoiler. People will get to the top s.spaces, and if they don't what to know, they'll just go to the next letter. Thus, it would be smart to move spoilers to the ~end of the letter~. *pleadingly* Please? *claps hands together* Well, that pretty much wraps up this-- what was that? Oh, yes. Hello to all Newbies!!! (Since I've been away for so long, maybe I qualify for a reSPLOOSHing? *looks hopeful*) I abase myself to pretty much everyone, and for those who made it to the end of this letter, good for you!! You get a prize -- your very own miniature hertasi to organise your life! ^_^;; Enjoy!! Iridescent indigo chibi-sheep to all! Konbon wa! She drops her seat on the ground and flops down into it, with Styx curling up by her feet* Sorry I haven't posted in so long! Been a very busy girl! Age for Misty: I think that junior-high would be a good time to start. I was in love with Andre Norton at that point, though. I think I just loved adult books, too. Some of Misty's work is more for adults to fully understand, but, I believe it's up to the reader's ability to understand and comprehend the stories. Companions & Heralds: Companions and Heralds cannot outlive each other, the sole exception being the Monarch's Own and their Companion. If the Herald dies, the Companion will choose again (i.e. Rolan and Talia). If the Companion dies, another Grove-born will appear to take it's place. Thank you for the Misty web-page, whoever posted it! I can't remember. This has been one of the two weeks of my life. I myself like Misty's forays into science fiction. I'm a big fan of her SKitty stories and would like to see more of them. And for whoever mentioned that they like David Eddings and L.E. Modesitt as well, I agree. I'm still waiting for the next Soprano Sorceress book to come out, however.... Well, enough for now! Hope I haven't bored you all to tears yet! :-) === ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Stormdance k'T'more y Kuus, Peon to the Powers That Be, Devotee to the OoUH, (Hopeful)Goddess of All Things Possessed, Mindmate to Styx A'ska, Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
