My name is Lady Gellan, aka Silvertalon. I've been lurking since February, and being the unexperienced newbie I was, went on vacation and let my mail pile up to 600 messages. I've finally finished reading all the mail in mailbox. (If anyone's wondering, I just came back from Calgary and this time, I didn't neglect my mail.) If anyone feels that a water dumping is appropriate on the not-quite-so-new newbie, feel free by all means. The suburbs of D.C. are especially HOT, and we're currently having a drought. (Cold water, please) I have invested a lot of money in big, fluffy towels. How do you sign up for the Order of Amber and Marigold and the Order of Unsung Heroes? I read the Newbiefest, but it's a little bit outdated. My response on the reincarnation thread: * * * * * * * Spoiler for Magic's Price * * * * * * * * * On pg. 331, paperback version of Magic's Price, Vanyel explains to Stef the process after a Herald and his Companion dies. Most of the Companions and Heralds have 2 choices. Either come back, in any form I presume, or go on to the Havens, which means that not all Heralds and Companions are reincarnated. * * End Spoiler Gellan aka Wingsister Silvertalon I dub myself Loyal Subject of the Great Spork Empire (if that's okay with Stormwolf) http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Dreamworld/9782/ "Anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn't the work he is supposed to be doing." -Robert Benchley ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. First of all, welcome to the list. Regarding the similarities between Companions and Piers Anthony's "unisi", the concept of intelligent creatures bonding with humans is not unique to Misty. I wouldn't be surprised if it is quite common in the SciFi/Fantasy genres. One example I can think of is Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. If anything, the bond between dragon and rider forms a more central theme in McCaffrey's books than the bond between Companion and Herald does in Misty's. As for the equine similarities, Piers has used horse based creatures extensively in both his Xanth and Apprentice Adept series. Message-ID: <4eb79a9a.24d46987-+AT+-aol.com> I'm sure that long times readers of misty are aware of IF I PAY THEE NOT IN GOLD, the joint effort between misty and piers Anthony ... not the easiest of the books to read and not one that I'd recommend to someone who was just starting out with misty's books. The vastly different styles of writing war throughout the volume and it just cannot hold a reader's interest. I wondered about valdemar and misty's getting written out on it ... but then Anthony should d have long since gotten written out on xanth. I've not read his last 4-5 volumes in the series, because I'd gotten read out on it. That is a series that you should do as a project in a summer or if you are on a trip, take all the volumes with you and just read them all at once. i think you are referring to "the last straw" missive misty wrote at least a couple of years ago to tell why they are not doing any more Diana tregard novels.(there is a sort story done before the last straw in the were hunters this spring, though.) it was published in queen's own and also through firebird. i was on the highflight website (don't have the URL, sorry to say. my computer crashed not too long ago and i lost my favorite book marks list, and i didn't have that one written down elsewhere. word of advice-- back up, back up, back up the things that you value!) i think it may have been on there. so if you're a newbie and don't know the story, check out those sites and see what it says.. story is too long and sordid to repeat here. also they had problems with some other not so nice people that contributed to their decision- i think that missive is the camel' back. hope this helps. I've been reading misty since arrows of the queen and have the first edition !! yes it's autographed! however I am a newbie to the list ... how many of you are members of queen's own? That's possibly the best place to get misty info. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 11:19:19 EDT From: MDennis460-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: the last straw and other matters. Message-ID: http://www.sff.net/people/highflight/HOME.htm I did a search and got this as the highflight home page... I checked it out and yes it is still there. you can even email highflight from there. But check out the frequently asked questions first, I advise, as if you are like me I don't like to waste people's time with things/questions that I can easily find out the answers else where. And FAQ are such things... ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2036 **********************************
