Per my feeble and often questioned memory I remember reading where if the
MOC was killed another would "appear" obviously from that I conclude that
they are grove born.  I also recall that "the Brat's" companion was grove
born
"just like the MOC"!   Check your book where "The Brat's" companion first
appears, in the grove, only two people were present when she appeared.
Everyones memory "including the MOC and TB" were then altered to where she
had always been part of the herd.

Sorry I can't recall names right off the top of my head,  it must be time to
reread the books.  But I agree 150% that the MOC is grove born, and was the
ONLY grove born prior to the Arrows series when TB's companion appears.

Thank you for going to the site and down loading these for everyone to read 
for themselves. I thought they were there, but thought that people should go 
and read them for themselves.  both instances were very traumatic and sad and 
horrible for her and are in the past now. 

now that we all know what and why misty says she wont write any more Diana 
Tregard books, i am most ready to urge a move onto other things/topics.  i am 
enjoying the discussion of the MOC and the MOH and reincarnation.  it reminds 
me of a snippet of conversation i overheard between misty and another fan at 
Rivercon several years ago in Louisville.  that intrigued me then and still 
does so now. i only met misty hat one time and so i don't know her 
personally.  yet i went to that convention to meet her, and am glad i did, as 
a couple of years afterwards there was a notice in queen's own that she and 
Larry were quitting coming to cons.    yet when i do an Internet search on 
misty there is a web page for a Chicago con that says the they will be there. 
 make me wonder what gives?  guess i need to email the convention and see if 
misty and Larry will be there..does anyone else want to do it and report back?

I must say, that was the longest flame I've ever seen, and one of the most
eloquent.  I guess good writing manifests itself everywhere?  Its just a
shame to hear that Ms. Lackey has to deal with all these problems, when all
she's given me was adventure, romance, and fun.  Its sad times indeed when
a letter like that has to be written at all.

Hi! I'm phil... I'm an avid Mercades lackey fan, having read the entire
gambit of her Heralds of Valdemar series, and most of her other books to
fill in the gaps.  I also am a big L.E. Modesitt, Jr. fan,  oh heck, I'm a
fan of just about any literature with more than 5 books in the series. :)

I'm thinking that maybe the Grove Born really are "new souls" and after
maybe a few years of being Monarch's Own Companion, (Gwena being the
exception) they come back as a "regular" Herald or Companion.  In the
mean time, most of the Heralds don't choose to go on to the Havens,
because they're all wonderful, and feel that they still have "duty" to
Valdemar.  That's my take, I guess.

Sorry, but I needed that moment of creativity. I spent four hours today in a
drivers education class learning that 'disobeying traffic laws is a bad
thing to do'. Four hours down, twenty to go...!

Anyway, ::blushes:: I do remember the part about Rolan being grove born.
What I meant was...honestly, I forget what I meant. I think I was confused
by Gwena's personality and Rolan's lack of one. Or something. =]

On the radio this morning, I heard about a movie that's new here called
"blair witch project" or something along those lines. I guess it's one of
those things where they lead you to believe its a true story, but it in
reality isn't. Anyway, they said that busloads of teenagers were coming to
the little town that this movie was filmed at and looking for the dead
bodies in the town graveyard and stuff like that. It reminded me of the
on-list discussion about "hello, this is fiction", so I thought I would
mention it!

I think the story that you are talking about is called "Wet Wings" and
it is in the Sisters of Fantasy II anthology that was released a couple
of years ago.  

Some one asked about the story "Dumb Feast" I always liked that story
and I thought it was pretty typical Misty...if a little more bloody
minded than usual.  Misty has always seemed to have very little patients
with chauvinistic males and I think she was just trying to make a
statment.

Do you mean Blue Heart?  Blue Heart is in the Sword of Ice book.
I think it's about girl named Pilane.  Pilane means "butterfly" in
mountain-dialect.

Is Werehunter a book of short stories?

Hello everyone - 

I am a new person to this list and Lackey books.  I have just started reading 
them this summer.  Since, I am a quick reader :) I have gobbled up many of 
her books and short stories.  I was wondering exactly which books/ short 
stories contain Diana Tregard chacter.  I have read Jinx High, Children of 
the Night, Burning Water, and Werehunter.  Are those the only places that I 
would find Diana in them?  I also truly enjoyed the Skitty and Scat short 
stories.  Are there more stories out there with these cats?  If not is Misty 
contuning to write about them?

A little bit of textual evidence: "...and now all Companions with a 
single exception are born right here at the Collegium.  That 
exception is the Companion to the Monarch's Own Herald...That 
Companion always appears from the grove..." Teren to Talia's class.(AoQ
pg.124, ppr.ed.)  "And that could only mean one thing; Gwena, like Rolan--and 
unlike any other Companion currently alive--was Grove-born.  But why?  For 
centuries only Monarch's Own Companions had appeared in the Grove 
like Companions of old." (AFlight pg. 28, ppr.ed.)

   While this is true about Gwena, you can't really
say that about all groveborn as a whole. Gwena was a
special case in that she was brought down to bond with
Elspeth, who needed to be Chosen, but hadn't been.
Also, in the Wind books, it's shown that Gwena was
kept oblivious to the plans that were made for Elspeth
(textevd can be found, I believe, in the conversation
with Vanyel).

   Unfortunately, the only Companion that we see as
frshly groveborn is Gwena. It would be nice to see how
a MOC would be, but none have been written yet.

   In regards to Companions at the start of Valdemar
(Lanen Mirjana's post), I had thought that one of the
books had explained how there were a small influx of
groveborn Companions after the first three. After
that, then the Companions started to create natural
offspring.

   It would make sense for there to be a greater
growth rate at the beginning for new souls and such,
but they needed a source of Companion spirits for
those Heralds that were already living. Companions
might be able to breed well, but I don't think ~that~
well *g*.

it was included in the Sword of Ice anthology... a

   Welcome to all newbies :). If you have any
questions that are related to the discussion list
(about abbreviations, braiding, etc) you can e-mail
myself or anyone else that has the title of Councilor
of Mist in their signature. We mostly keep to the
background, but pop out of the woodwork every now and
then :). And we don't bite.. unless you're made out of
chocolate ;).

   While I do have the Council hat on (and others can
put in their two cents :), I'd ask people to remember
to snip out parts of messages that they reply to. A
lot of people are either limited by work for the
length of the e-mails they can receive, or pay for the
amount of data that they receive... the longer the
e-mail, the more expensive it is. While I'm not saying
to limit the conversation, unneeded parts of replies
are easy to snip out... why we have Delete and
Backspace keys on the keyboard :).

Yes, WereHunter is Misty's newest book of short stories.  I *didn't* mean
Blue Heart.  I *know* where I've read that one.

That's the story, but I haven't read any of the Sisters of Fantasy

There's been another shooting in Atlanta.  As far as I've gathered from
the noews, someone opened fire at Grady Hospital.  My sister just ran
upstairs to tell me, since it's all over the news.  What is happening to
the human race?  No wonder Misty was so afraid of those people threatening
her!  These people are lunatics!  And Atlanta seems to be getting more
than our fair share.  I'm not sure when/if this'll make the national news
(probably will, 'specially since it's happening right after what happened
at Piedmont with Barton), but it's really getting bad over here...I'm
starting to wonder if someone's going to open fire next time I'm at the
grocery store or something!

As for an ob-Misty, welcome, Virginia!  ~SPLOSH~  *hands her a fluffy
towel*  I always wanted to splosh someone! ;)  As far as I know, those are
the only DT books/stories.  (I'm not sure how long you've been on the
list, but DT has been one of our latest topics)  No more will be written
because of lunies like our wonderful fellow at Grady right now.  (If you

There's a letter from Misty called The Last Straw, then there's another

About the Grove born as new souls:

I don't think that this is the case.  In the first Winds book, (sorry, no
page numbers, I don't have the book with me at work) when Elspeth approached
Quenten, he looked at her with mage sight and saw Elspeth and Skif, both
riding Guardian Spirits.  The one that Elspeth was on was a much more
powerful spirit than Skif's.  It appears to me that standard companions are
reincarnated Heralds, but GB's are more like the Valdemar equivalent of
angels - spirits created to serve the gods.  That's why, in my opinion,
Gwena had no sense of her own fallibility.

I picked up the feeling that Van and Stephen hadn't planned on staying
in Sorrows as long as they did. (WInds of Fury). Kinda makes me doubt
they'd choose to come back again so soon! (I know I'd want a vacation
after centuries of watching!)

Yes, but if the need were great, wouldn't such souls as they want to return
to help put things right, etc. et al?  What other reason besides a sense of
duty or love to the land would you want to be reincarnated for? Every
earthly need can be had in Havens, I would assume.  What if some of the
souls don't have control over when/if they are reincarnated?  We've seen an
overtone of repeated matchups throughout the herald's series.

Just a though.  oh, and what is this "fluff" thing?

Many people have been discussing Gwenna as a new soul, and I remember
someone even quoting Vanyel about it, but I can't even find it in the
archives from the last couple of days.  But what Vanyel said was something
to the affect of "Gwenna is no older than you, and has no real human
experience."  It always seemed rather carefully phrased to me.  Elspeth
was Chosen (by Gwenna) when she was 14, and if Gwenna is "no older" than
her, that leaves about 14 years that are not accounted for in which she
*could* have been alive.  What if she was a dyheli or a kyree or
something, and died young?  I don't know.  Any thoughts?

Concerning the MOC besides GB, and being reincarnated immediately if killed
(from the Arrows books) I believe that Rolan is not a new soul, or even a
different soul with each reincarnation.

 Remember that Talia seemed to always know when she was needed by someone
AND exactly what to say.  The queen remarked at least once on how Talia
seemed to have wisdom beyond her years.

The only source I can see for this wisdom is Rolan, who via his link with
the MO transfers the knowledge that is required at that time, later perhaps
as the MO developes his/her own experience and knowledge the transfers would
not be required as often.   Where does Rolans wisdom come from?    From past
lives, possibly channeled to him from past MO's, or directly from his
god/goddess?   Is Rolan an Avatar?   It's possible.   As a new MO Talia
needed all the help she could get and as a Borderkin girl she did not
exactly receive a great deal of training in the field of her new job.

Anyway that's my two cents worth.
