I tend to like the cover art, but I agree that BtS is very...off...also, doesn't it seem like the covers on MPawn and MPrice should be switched? Van looks so much younger on MPrice...! I absolutely *love* the cover of Black Swan though! =] Also, what's even more annoying is the blurbs on the back of the books. I was reading MPawn (for the hundredth time) at the theatre and someone wanted to know what I was reading so I showed them the back. And then I read it myself. Did the person who wrote that actually *read* the book? Same with BtS, I noticed. This is completely off topic, but was I the only person who didn't like 'Firebird'? It bored me... Well, unbeknownst to most of you, we have completed our move and are now living on 160 acres of mostly farmland, we have added a rabbit, two goats, 6 chickens and 2, 1/3 wolf puppies to our already interesting household of 3 dogs, 1 cat and 5 kids (not goats). Our compter crashed in the move, and even now, I am working on a laptop, rather than my wonderful computer. *pout* Well, having all the farm animals has renewed my appreciation for my ancestors. Devan talks about hunting >them and how people have had bites taken out of them by griffins. Are >these the same civilized gryphons we meet in the Gryphon and Winds >series? Or just a coincidence of name? I have always thought that there are "greater" and "lesser" griffins, differentiated by the spelling of their names. Those Gryphons who stayed with humans, remained civilized, and intelligent, while those who were lost or who struck out on their own, slowly devolved back to their primitive ancestry and became griffins. Urtho created them from animals to begin with and them bred them to be smarter, devolving isn't that difficult to imagine with their already feral natures. **************** Well, for those who want Misty's official answer on Van, Stef and Yfandes, you can see Kory's Con Questions on my website: http://welcome.to/GrayHaven Go to Herald's Hall, you'll be directed to the place from there. **************** As for speculation? I think Vanel would be a blast to have as a Companion! *grin* He would be vain, and love to be brushed, he would love to listen to the llamas sing. I think he could finally have the chance to "let loose" and have some fun, but I also think that he would always want to be at the forefront of battles. I also think he would be one of those Companions that broke the rules, and would talk to the poor little homesick trainees (all colors) and let them know they aren't alone in Haven. Are > these the same civilized gryphons we meet in the Gryphon and Winds > You know, I wondered about this one too - but here's my theory - they are the "anti-gryphons" created by Ma'ar. Perhaps an enclave survived and since they aren't as smart as Uthro's they may have degenerated to wild creatures... Or maybe thats just their way of saying "Keep out" if they are the orgional gryphons. Speaking of good story ideas, who would like to see a book about how Iftel was formed??? That would be fabulous! Of course it might defeat Misty's whole plot device of "no one really remembers Iftel is there." Again, we've got god(s) screwing with people's memories.... I highly doubt that Urtho's creations would harm people, though there have been "evil" among them. Another possibity is that these griffins are outcasts of the K'Leshya clan or Iftel, and flew to the northwest sector of Valdemar. Here's a quote from mPrice by Van (well, actually his thoughts): "He couldnt' subvert us, he couldn't take us on openly, so he destroyed us singly. The Herald-Mages were the easiest for him to identify at a distance-and the ones he considered most threatening. And I was right; he's been killing children and trainees, making it look like accidents, for a very long time now. Getting the children the moment their Mage-Gift manifested, if he could. Like Tylendel.... (new paragraph) Like me." So, my question is, were 'Lendel and Van actually threatened by Leareth when their Gifts manifested? Did this have something to do with the huge fit 'Lendel had when his Gifts manifested? Could Van just not have ben able to read the attack due to all of the pain he was under? As for the return of Van/Stef/Yfandes' souls, i wouldn't see them coming back. First, it would be strange to write another trilogy about the same people, and I really can't see Van as a supporting character. Also, it seemed to me that Van was really looking forward to the r&r of the Havens. As in the end of mPromise, where he said (these aren't the exact words, but..) that it was primarily his duty that brought him back (as well as his friends), and since he fulfilled his duty, I think Van will enjoy his break. Also, even though Van lifebonded twice, he really didn't have much time to spend with them, and after being in Sorrows for such a long time, he probably doesn't want to leave Stef. Well, that's just my two cents worth. To tie these two topics together, the dustjacket description of Firrebird has absolutely NOTHING to do with the actual plot. it's really a startling discrepancy. As far as finding it boring...it wasn't awful, but it's the only one of lackey's books that i've only read once. This is the first collaboration book that I've read with Ms. Lackey in it, and I honestly only picked it up because I happen to like Andrew Norton also, and I've been bolth dissapointed and impressed. I found it interesting that Ms. lackey seems to control to characters, while Ms. Norton is controlling the way the land looks and feels. Did y'all feel that the darker style of writing imposed on these books (it seems darker in a way, than any of the Valdemar set books i've read to this point) which were published in '95 had any effect on her valdemar based books written after that? Or maybe even that they should have? I happened to like the vivid picture of how life is for all levels of people that are portrayed in this book, something that I've felt was lacking in the herald-based series, they've always seemed to center around specific people rather than types of people, etc. et al. The terror of dying alone in those dreams and the things that happened in them seemed as if they would encourage suicide just to get away from it all. I think you may be right about the fits that 'Lendel had, because the people in his area seemed to want him dead... the only reason they didn't do anything about it was that Staven stepped in. So really, they could have been attacks. extremely subtle attacks. those are usually the best kind. Making 'Lendel go mad was, in the end probably a very direct attack, because I seem to remember that Leareth didn't really do too many direct attacks, he preferred to keep it looking like accident. wait. I'm confusing me. I think I'll just stop now and give everyone nice ice-water filled sheep water bottles. It helps ease scratchy, dry throats. And only one has really ever had problems with lamers. For anyone who is used to hanging out on IRC, if you are on EFnet, you can try dropping in on #Velgarth or #Valdemar. On DALnet, I run a channel called #k'Valdemar. Further, I believe there is still a #Valdemar channel on Undernet. Admittedly, none of these channels are frequently used. I think #Velgarth may have the most use, but even that tends to drift off of the Misty topics and become just a place for friends to gather and chat. > Just so you don't interpet this as spam I have not included server info Well, it wouldn't be considered spam, since it is Misty and List related. However, if you really really were worried, you can always add an ObMisty. That's what they are for, after all. =) Oh, and btw, just so everyone knows, none of these channels will permit Misty-based role-playing. On my channel, for one, trying to start role-playing based on Misty, or persisting in using one of her characters as a persona will get you banned from the channel. I'm pretty certain that the other channel owners have similar policies. The channels are places for people to discuss Misty's work or have really fluffy conversations that have nothing to do with Misty. And a certain amount of role-playing is expected and accepted (not gaming, but role-playing) as long as it is not Misty-based. If you don't know why, check out the newbiefest re: copyrights. ObMisty: about the discrepancy between the cover blurbs and the contents of the novel. This is pretty prevalent in the publishing industry. Remember, the purpose of the cover is not to give you an accurate description of the contents. It is a form of advertising which is designed to get you to plunk down some hard-earned cash and buy the book. So, the blurbs are written as teasers or exciters. If they aren't exactly accurate, that's not considered a bad thing as long as they are effective.
