Since this program doesn't let me braid, I'm just going to give you vague subject headings and hope that you're intelligant enough to figure out what I'm talking of. =] ON FIREBIRD: I didn't really like it. It bored me. The story just didn't interest me - maybe because I had never heard the story before? ON FIRE ROSE: I liked it *because* it was very Victorian. I love Victorian novels (I'm the kind of person that the other students hate because I actually understand the assigned reading and enjoy the classics. Hee, hee, hee) COVER BLURBS: Here's my solution - I do this in real life all the time - ignore what it says on the back cover, just open the book to a random place and start reading. If it captures your interest, than the book might be worth reading. I do not, however, reccomend this if you are looking at mysteries or it bothers you to know things before they happen. =] ROBIN MCKINLEY: Her stories are really good! Especially Deerskin, I highly reccomend it. Both Beauty and Rose Daughter were good too. And the one with lots of faerie stories in it...I forget the name...! Also, I have a question for all of you. Have any of you read the 'Harry Potter and...' books? I've read the two that are out in the U.S., and they were much better than I expected. I just wondered about every one else's opinions... Oh, welcome newbies and or lurkers! =] And, an ObMisty - I was thinking about religion in Valdemar, and the whole 'no one true way' thing. There are many people portrayed of the different religions, but can anyone remember a Herald who was particularly religious? I can't... well, fare thee well! Did Leareth somehow know of the mage-potential Van had and take control of Father Leren a long time ago? We know that the priest's influence on Withen made Van's home situation worse. But, then Leren wouldn't have convinced Withen to send Van to Haven as his guesture at the dinner implied. So maybe Leareth used the priest's hatred of Van to get a hold on Leren's soul and then subverted Leren from the Mavelan's for his own purposes. Oh great, now I'm going to wonder about this all night long.>> Staci M Chronister wrote: <> Looking back on that post, I realized that I wasn't exactly as coherent as I could have been. (I was on the tail end of 4 nights of about 4 hours sleep each night. Sorry.) I kinda talked myself out of Leren's being controlled since Van's early childhood. But at the time of his physical attack on Van in MPromise, he was being controlled, and not just by the Mavelans. Van mentioned that he felt some dark force flee from the priest when he was defending himself. Then later, the priest ends up dead in his cell so that he couldn't be questioned. What I meant by the end of my message was that: Maybe after Van's gifts had manifested, Leareth used Leren's hatred of Van and already evil actions to gain a foothold in his soul. Using this, Leareth could have easily taken over control of Leren from the Mavelan family, who had undermined the whole priesthood holding where Leren was taught. Hope I didn't just confuse you more. There has been a couple of people asking about the sheep thing. Well shame on you, you haven't read the newbiefest, found at http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html. There it is all reveiled. I still have my MLML link page up and running at http://www.angelfire.com/wa/Absalon/, and I would like more links, so if people want their site on the list, please mail me privately with the URL and name of the site. Someone ( forgot who, sorry ) asked some time ago, if we wanted to see Misty write more SF. I really liked The Ship who Searched, written together with McCarthry, so I would like her to write more of that kind of stuff. Her Urban fantasy I don't really like on the other hand, but then I don't like ANY urban fantasy. Have any read her Reap the Whirlwind, written together with Cherryh? As for names, most members of this list haev very fertile imaginations *g*, so names and other titles are invented/suggested at times. I reccommend checking out the NewbieFest, and the address was given a couple posts ago, so I won't repeat it. Sionen asked: <> PB= paperback HB= hardback As for maps, they are included in the PB mPrice and (I'm pretty sure) all three PB Storm books (definitely SB and all the hardcover Storm books). I'm not sure about the others, since I don't have copies of those with me. Now as for cover art/blurbs, I feel your pain. I remarked about the SB cover, and I found it interesting how Van grew younger over the trilogy (though I must confess I love the cover of mPrice). And as for the little blurbs, I've experienced that, too. The LHM trilogy's blurbs are slightly skewed if you look at them after you've read the book (and in none of the blurbs is there even a mention of either of Van's lifebonded). But again, in fairness, the Storm books had basically relevent blurbs, so I feel I must mention that. What did people think of that one? I read that back when I first discovered Misty and I was obsessively reading anything that she wrote, not that I've changed all that much. I know its the tail end of a trilogy but I honestly have to say that it is the only Misty book and/or collaboration of hers that I have only read once. It just did not impress me at all which kind of surprised me because I obviously love Misty and I had really enjoyed Cherryh's Rusalka books. Thinking back the only things about it that I can remember is that the so called "barbarians" had better medicines and better bows than the "civilized" mages. It just seemed to be a rather pointless book to me and I didn't think the styles meshed very well. Copyright applies to both pictorial and textual material. So, yes, the maps are copyrighted. In fact, they are usually copyrighted separately. So, yes, making an unauthorized copy of the map is illegal. ObMisty: wouldn't it be great if someone got Karen Wynn Fonstad hooked on Misty and she did an Atlas of Velgarth, like her Atlases of Pern, Middle-Earth, and Krynn? Of course, since Misty isn't really into world-building (being more interested in characters), there might not be enough info in the Velgarth books to really yield an interesting and in depth Atlas.
