For Gods of Velgarth: There are at least four. V&H 2 has a song refering to a consort of the Star-Eyed. One of the Mage Wars books (#1, I think) has Karl mention a consort to Vkandis. The Empire has the "100 Little Gods". Do they count? For amorphus gods, Tremane thinks (SW) about how they "institute the worship" of "100 Little Gods" next to "whatever gods the barbarians workship". In AOTQ, Mero worships The One. They recreate Medieval (but believe they get into other periods as well) costumes, jousts, and generally the entire Medieval world. They take on personas from that period, and have regular get-togethers. They divide up the "known world" into various kingdoms, etc., and can get quite serious about the whole thing. I'm not an SCA, but once knew someone who was heavily into it. If memory serves, it was founded in Arizona, or around that area. I'm sure there's someone on the list who's much more familiar with it than I am -- but that's a brief synopsis of the group. They have a lot of fun together, so if you enjoy that type of role playing, I'm sure they'd be interested in hearing from you. May all your children be born young. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Aug 1999 10:12:24 -0700 (PDT) From: T Stafford To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Grove born offspring Message-ID: <19990814171224.28164.rocketmail-+AT+-web119.yahoomail.com> During a late night Valdemar discussion my partner came up with an interestibg question - would the offspring of two Grove born companions be different in any way? Since Gwena and Rolan are both Grove born, it could happen. What do you think? In re-reading the LHM series this week, i've finally decided to post my observation about names in Valdemar. I've noticed that in earlier books (historically earlier.. LHM, Mage Wars), characters for the most part were given surnames. ex: Vanyel Ashkevron, Wester Leshara, Skandranon Rashkae, Tylendal Frelennye etc. Out of curiosity, i'm wondering if there is a reason we don't see much of surnames in AOtQ, BTS, WOF, MStorms, etc. seeing that AOtQ was written BEFORE LHM and Mage Wars, i'm wondering if there could be something i've missed about the lack of last names mentioned in later books.... it could just be that they've been deemed unimportant and gone unmentioned, or i could even be missing them completely. i'm sure others have noticed this before... i'd love some more speculation!! Oh and on the topic of names... i've often wondered about pronunciation of some names in Misty's books. For one, i've heard Van's name pronunced like Vanyil.... personally i've always pronunced Van with a yell... like that... confused yet? I dunno, maybe nobody really cares... i was just wondering. and of course thats not the only name i've thought twice on... but if i kept going i'd be wasting space. *sigh* perhaps i should just stop nit-picking eh? -Don't tear anything down unless you've got something to replace it with. *El* ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Aug 1999 18:33:17 EDT From: DNurkTwins-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Major De-Lurk & Names Message-ID: <7f48961.24e748ad-+AT+-aol.com> Bright the day, listsibs! But you're right- a lot of surnames are omited from less-major characters and even some pretty major characters. some of them *couldnt* know their surnames (ie: (and i'm just guessing here) Skif and Stefen because they were orphans, and some just didnt really have surnames, such as the Tayledras, who only had k'[their Vale], and taht was generally mentioned. And as for name pronunciation ( i say van-YELL), i've often wondered about that, and i don't think you're nit-picking. one i've always wondered about was An'desha. i used to say an-DEH-shyah, but after he mentioned that his name had an unusual pronunciation (during his introduction to Karal by Talia, where his and Karal's last names were also mentioned), i began pronouncing it an-DAY-shyah. (uh, sp?) But this Companion would definetely not be Grove Born, because Grove Borns have to be born in the grove. This kind of thing usually does not happen; Gwena was an exception. The offspring of 2 Grove Borns could, I suppose, choose the Senechal's Herald, or some other important person. I've often wondered about this myself. Is there a pronunciation guide for Valdemar. I wasn't sure of how to pronounce Yfandes, Ylsa, and a lot of Shin'a'in words and names. My friend and I also had a discussion of how to pronounce Talia. I said it was supposed to be Tahlia, my friend said it was supposed to be Talia, A as in cat.
