ANYWAYS.... okay, now here is a question that my friends and i have been working on for a while. Can anyone think of a misty character who is your average, run-of-the-mill, normal type citizen? i know normal *is* a rather interesting term, but what i mean by it is someone who had a reasonably average life. You might think of, i.e., Talia, pre-Chosing. She, however, had a very strong gift of Empathy, she had an abusive brother, and a pretty wacked-out family. You might think of Keisha. She, too had a very strong Gift (not specified for lack of spoiler warning, a Gift strong enough to be taken notice of by certain ppl, whome i will also not name) and various other things that make her very much not your average town people-fixer-upper. You may even think of Jadus (-sp?) that guy with the harp who becomes Talia's friend. But think about it! someone who gets Chosen is *not* average! How about Gaurdsman Jonne? he seems normal. nope. he becomes *Herald Mage Vanyel's* lover! how is that in the realm of possibility for most? besides. we only know of him through Van, not because of who Jonne is or what he does. One more example. Rune. She seems normal, except for that HUGE amount of Bardic talent! oh, okay, one more. You may think of Karal, but how many Karsite novices go to Valdemar with their mentor as envoys and end up with a sort-of Companion and-this clinches it- how many ppl are magic channels or whatever, and are known personaly to a god? not very many. Now, i understand that a perfectly "normal" person with a perfectly "normal" life and with nothing interesting happening to them would make a very boring book indeed. but why can't we have an all-around average citizen live normaly for a little while, and then have something exciting happen to them, *maybe* meet someone important (preferably not) and have an adventure? A story made not because they have extrodinary backgrounds, amazing powers, or "conections," but instead because they are lucky (or unlucky), above average in the brains department, or something like that. I AM NOT TRYING TO TELL MISTY WHAT TO WRITE. i just think it would be interesting to meet an average Valdemaren and stick with them, and i wonder why everybody Misty focuses on is such a "famous personality." Can anyone think of anybody (in Velgarth or otherwise, though i admit i haven't read Di Tragarde stuff) who would consitute my implied version of "average?" any thoughs at all? *~*~*~*~*~*~*FLUFF ALERT!*~*~*~*~*~*~* ::A tall, slim younge woman with long, dripping orange hair and wearing her usual atire (giant gray sweat pants, black S. F. Shakespeare Festival shirt, and neat-o water cape from Yvonne) marches into the Hall., stands for a moment at an odd swaying sort of attention, and collapses with a loud SQUISH. If Lady Brynn hadn't toppled over from band-camp induced exhaustion, she probably would have done something like this: 'The Lady squelches up behind the newbies with exagerated caution (like a burglar in an old movie), pulls the Enchanted Bucket #2 (tm) from behind her, and dumps it's very wet contents (often known as "really cold salt water") over Jen, Kory and Os. ~~SPLOOSH!!~~ She grins at the suprised listsibs, snickers, and says "Welcome to the MLML! Anyways, please visit the NewbieFest at www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html, and if you have any questions, just 'mail a Councilor of Mist (they have their titles in their sigs). Once again, welcome! Don't be afraid to jump in! Oh, and welcome back, Sorana! Good morning, listsib, Prepare for rant,****** Is any one else as dissapointed as I am at Misty's recent rash of "stick several volumes together and give it a new title and get more money" books? And, before anyone says it, yes I belive she has a right/need to make money and yes it is sometimes nice to have the books/stories in one volume (that's why I buy SFBC), but in the last year I think the only new stories have been, owl* and Black Swan. Everything else has been a new bound version of old stuff. Is she worn out? Did she bite off more than she could chew by saying that several other books were in the works? I can think of at least 6 books that have been "forthcoming" for at least 2 years, maybe longer. And while some of them have been canceled, (ie. Arcanum 101 and Triangle Park) most have just never materialized, (ie. Tempest Fugit, Blood and Soil, Elven Born, Beyond the World's End, and the rest of the fairy tale books, although to be fair, they seem to be coming out one a year). With her new-found wealth, and popularity, will she ease up on some of her other stances? Will we indeed, one day see Arcanum and Triangle? If the republishing of older books, gives her the needed financial security to write better by taking longer, then I suppose it is a useful thing. But, if the quality continues to suffer by the leaps and bounds that most listsibs complain of, then I will have to think that she has fallen to "hack writer for money" status like her dreaded nemisis, Piers Anthony. In which case, they are stil fun to read, but are not literary masterpieces that fire the imagination and emotion, like her earlier works. End rant******* Hmmm. COmputer deprivation is really getting to me......I want MY computer back *pout* *********************** And Kory, Yes, it was left open for another book (Jinx High), Arcanum 101 or Triangle Park (I'm not sure which order they were to go in) But they will not be published due to crazy death threats. Instead a book about Andre will be written in its place (Blood and Soil). Frankly, I always thought that Andre was the best part of the books, anyway. ************************* If she was the editor of Sword of Ice, and is so worried about fanfic messing up her time lines, why didn't she edit the mistakes better? ************************ Philip: No, I don't think the darker tone impressed on her Velgarth books, in fact I think the opposite happened, they became lighter in feeling, as though she was afraid to call up the darker emotions. ************************* New question/actually an old question: Do you think that Misty's lack of portrayl of children in her works is due to not having much experience with them, or due to feeling that children don't have much interesting to do/say? Other than a passing mention, no children under about 12 are mentioned (Elspeth may have been a little younger, but she was strictly portrayed as a stereotypical brat) (Jisa my have been younger, but only had a quick mention until she gt older). No Companion babies are dealt with either....and with all the free sex going on a the Collegium, pregnancy is only dealt with once and that in passing. (Don't the birth herbs ever fail?) Where do Herald's raise their families? Do they just retire? Do they never have kids? That would be really hard on the gene pool, or do they do like Vanyel and have their children raised by others? ******************* Wonder to thy Thoughts, Dax the Eternal, Councilor of Mist, Goddess of Elves and Unicorns, etc..... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 10:55:52 -0500 From: Julia Gray To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Kids Message-ID: <37C41207.92C58B6F-+AT+-oakton.edu> Tim Gray wrote: > Do you think that Misty's lack of portrayl of children in her works is due > to not having much experience with them, or due to feeling that children > don't have much interesting to do/say? Other than a passing mention, no > children under about 12 are mentioned What about the page that helps Talia? I'm not sure that it's either of the above reasons - I know that I'd have a hard time reading a book that was not YA or even kidfic that had a (and certainly not THE) major character too young. I'd just have a hard time relating and sympathizing with a character, who, for the most part is not cognizant of their place in the world and how their actions affect others, doesn't have adult logic, and usually doesn't have the ability to change his/her circumstances. Once again, for the most part, all of those things usually converge near puberty. (I tried to put in the caveat for the most part because of course there are exceptions). > Where do Herald's raise their families? > Do they just retire? Do they never have kids? That would be really hard on > the gene pool, or do they do like Vanyel and have their children raised by > others? okay, possible spoiler for Storms W A R N I N G S P A C E She does talk about this with Natoli - but as I don't have the books on hand, I don't have textevd. I would say, from memory, that it depends on the Herald. Some spend time in the collegium so they can be with their children, some foster them out to be with theother kids in the palace (as, I think, Natoli was), some just don't have kids. In the Firebird catalog it reads in part - Like Tannim, for instance, a young human mage with a taste for hot Celtic rock (good music-personal comment),fast cars, and dangerous women. Now he thinks he's found Ms. Right. There are only three tiny little problems: 1. Her father is a dragon. 2. She's not human, though she's definitely a fox. 3. She wants to kill him. Based on that I would hazard to guess that this is another "collection" book, or they have decided to rename Chrome Circle and try and pass it off as a new book, either of which spell watch out in my book. The "Serrated Edge" books I know of are - Born to Run, Wheels of Fire, When the Bough Breaks (VERY distrubing book!), Elvendude, Chorome Circle and Spiritride. I'll wait to see it in a book store then most likely leave it sitting on the shelf. A) I don't think her quality if suffering _that_ much. I've been enjoying her new books. In fact, _Four_&_Twenty_Black_Birds_ was _really_ good! Yeah, I know that was one of the 'older' new ones. I like _Owlflight_ a lot too, though. B) I happen to like Piers Anthony's books! Okay, so his Xanth novels _are_ reptitive and tend to smack you over the head with constant puns (I'm not an idiot, I have noticed these things), but I think his Mode series is very good. I also happened to like _If_I_Pay_Thee_Not_In_Gold_. I'd list others, but I haven't managed to get my hands on any of his other series just yet. And besides, it's nice to read something very fluffy and funny (Although, Terry Pratchett might be a little better at it). I for one don't like having my insides constantly in knots over the fate of the chars in a book. Those _are_ always some of the best books; I just need a break after a while.
