Okay, since I've been on vacation, I've had ample opportunity for pondering. Now, since there's been much discussion of names, I have a question. When Savil revisits k'Treva in mPrice, she tries to get Starwind and Moondance's help (trying not to give away too much plot). When they at first do not agree, she gets the help of a female scout named Firesong. Now, does this have any significance or relation to the more popular Firesong? Another is the servant who invites Talia and Jadus to the Midwinter festival (who was mentioned earlier), who is named Medren, the same name as Van's Bard nephew. Also, a quick thought. I wonder if the Blues are divided among themselves, as former-clerks, Artificers, and high-born. It seems so, since Natoli's group (Artificers) are very different and have different characteristics and places of gathering and such than the Blues who plagued Talia in AotQ (high-born). Also, while rereading SB, I came across a passage in which Melles was listening to a girl play a harp at some party or function- the song she played was said to be a version of "an old chesnut, 'My Lady's Eyes.'" Now, this made me think that maybe Tremane, Sejanes, and the once-Imperial troups might be helpful in uncovering forgotten parts of Valdemaran culture, since "My Lady's Eyes" was a song of Van's time, and the Empire seems to have kept remembrance of these parts of culture, for them to have been easily recognized. Finally, I am going to try something. Someone remarked that Heralds might not see signs of reincarnation in names, beacause the only people to know would be Historians, and people of that sort. Now, I'm goingto try to document the name of every Herald and Companion mentioned in the Velgarth books, important or not. I dont have a copy of any of the Winds books, though, so if someone could go through them, possibly on their next time of reading them, and write doen all the Heralds/Companions names they come across and send them to me. Also, I have yet read Owlsight, the Gryphon books or any of the Vows and Honor yet (including BtS- I'm sorry, I'm really working on it! *g*), so if someone could do the same fdor those. I didnt think that there would be any for Owlsight or the Gryphon books, but since I havent read them, I need to be sure. The result of this would be a guide to observe any name similarities (although I know they could just be coincidences). I've already noticed a few (ex: Beltren/ Beltran- one a Herald whose death is mention in AotQ, and the second, the "Herald" of King Valdemar- when Herald was just a diplomatic term- and the second actual Herald Chosen, also mentioned in AotQ). When the list is complete (which will probably take a while), I'll post it on the list, where corrections can be made. Well, that's all from me for now. Message-ID: <000301bef2be$15d8f280$1ac928c3-+AT+-oemcomputer> Hi all Brits! If you are based in Britain and were unable to attend the book signing by Misty on Sat 21st August, cheer up! Misty and Larry were exceptionally kind and gave me several signed bookplates so that those who were not able to come could still get a siggy! When presented with about the four-hundreth stack of books, Larry smiled and said, " Oh! Great! _MORE_ books!" in the happiest tone of voice. They work worked through lunch to sign our books and chat with us. Both were extremely friendly, warm... and the chats were tremendously funny- everyone was laughing and having a great time. Both very charismatic people and it was very enjoyable simply to be there to talk to them. I've just gotten back from holiday but I'm trying to write down everything I remember! I was meant to be in Wales you see, but I went to London and then across to meet my family for the holiday. I was in a bit of a rush therefore and I think I've gotten several things back to front... and forgotten stuff... for which I apologise. The below is how I remember the day and what was said- none of it is Misty or Larry's words, but I hope to have retained the gist of what they said! Sorry for inaccuracies:( Both Misty and Larry were a HUGE amount of fun. I was worried that I'd be disappointed to meet them in person, but it was quite the opposite! It was brilliant chatting to them... though I think I drove them nuts with all the questions I asked them! Here are some of the questions and answers! These aren't word for word but this is the gist of what was said! Apologies is anything is inaccurate. I was dashing about 'cos I was meant to be in Wales but this is what I remember. Will you be writing about the founding? No. It's best to leave it a legend. Will you be writing about Shadowdancer and Sunsinger ? No. Again... best left as a legend- makes it seem more mystic. Will you be writing more about Savil, Alberich? Probably about Alberich. Probably about Savil as well . Firesong is not going to get a 'book of his own'. ( BTW, Firebirdarts' info says that there should be more about Skitty, but nothing planned for Jennifer Talldeer.) Who is your favourite character? Amberdrake. A long-term relationship man. Wouldn't like to meet any of them after all the horrible things we did to them! Are you going to do an RPG computer game of valdemar? Willing to. Just contact the computer companies and ask for one if you want it! We'd prefer electronic Arts or Original Systems to be the producing companies. Is Stef really Lendel? Yes!! Does the MOC ever die? Yes. Often the MOC lives for a very long time and just keeps going but will probably die with herald when dies and a new grove-born appears. What's with Silver Gryphon? It seems like a duology and single book not a trilogy. It was meant that way. We were just curious to see what would happen with the children. What's going on with the replacement books for the Di Tregarde series? Instead of the book with Andre, there's going to be one with a friend of Andre's (a vampire) set in the earlier part of this century in Georgia,1950's- Chrome Borne . How about Brightly Burning? Yup. Soon hopefully. There should be two new books in October hopefully (OwlKnight and Chrome Borne). How about the fairy-tale retelling books? The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Snow White retellings are also going to be worked on soon. In Snow White, the seven dwarfs will actually be pets. I believe this will be set in 1910. The witch will be an Indian Goddess. The Cinderella story will go back to it's rather grisly origins where Cinderella's step-mother cuts of her finger/toe , bespells it and buries it under the hearth so she can't leave. When the prince comes around with a four fingered glove/shoe, the ugly sisters cut off their own digits... In the end, Cinderella leaves a four fingered glove and escapes the house. Sleeping beauty will be set in 1915. When her father dies, leaving her with little money, she goes out to work- not sure about that bit but it's to do with one of these books! How about the Elven books? The Elven books will be worked on as soon as possible- hopefully the second part of next year. There will be a book about Elizabeth the first of England as the queen on witches. And the Serrated Edge series? Tempest Fugit should be out relatively soon. It's a Tannim book! In fact, Misty's editor nearly got accidentally hit by a car with the license plate 'Tannim'! How do you write your books? Well, we take lots of long road trips... 36 hours sometimes. So we write plans from that- about 60 pages of detailled outline. From each page of outline, we write about 10 pages of the novel. It's good to be able to look at three pages and see the ten you've just done, the ten you're doing and the ten you're about to do. Is it difficult co-writing? How does that work for you? It works really well! We tend to always be in agreement so it's not a problem... and having the drafted outline means that we agree mostly where we're going in advance. What's your favourite book? Black Gryphon . (BTW, when lunch was brought it was presented to Larry as 'Gryphon food'. Larry and Misty also had matching bottles of coke.) Stories about Misty and Larry: When Misty got an obscene caller, she thought up a clever reply: 'Visa Mastercharge what is yourn number please.' The guy stopped calling. Misty's first husband thought up a solution to when their telephone number was close to one of an establishment of ill repute and girls kept being asked for: I'm sorry that we can't accomodate you but the robots are serviced during the daytime. Didn't you know? Larry however preferred the approach: Hello, Sisters of the light convent, Reverend mother speaking. We also heard about their birds. One cocatieu is a little monster, it's a little white ball of fluff and wrecks havoc and when it's finally cornered, it tips it's head to the side and says 'pretty'... and of course gets out of trouble! Another, when it was something says 'I love you'. If you're holding a cookie, it'll edge up to you and will say 'I _LOVE_ you', until it gets the cookie. Two out of third birds that misty and Larry look after get released into the wild. They usually get a whole set of one type at a time to look after. Misty is sent a large number of books to read. Often, Larry is working on his art and a book sails through the room and hits the wall and a cry echoes from the other room, 'Sucks!' Misty does read for enjoyment though and has certain books that she reads over and over- when she's having a bad time she says they cheer her up even though she knows exactly what's going to happen. I can't remember her favourite writers, but she did mention Barbara Hambly- the Darwath books. She and Larry are sadly not fans of Terry Prachett. They are good friends with Marion Zimmer Bradley and Andre Norton. They also used to attend conferences, and often they would gradually take up all the water jugs and glasses from the pannel and start playing impromptu chess with them... while Robert Aspin was pontificating... he did catch them moving the things finally though! They seemed to regard him with friendly insults. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 08:01:25 -0700 (PDT) From: "Korendel k'Vesta" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Chrome Borne answer and some NEW Misty books!
