I seem to have missed some good debates. Ah well. I am back in the land of the living, if not the healthy: I do not like being sick. But at least I can sit at my computer and go through the volumes of mail that have accumulated in my absence. And I can think: usually a plus, though not always. I am green with envy that someone actually got to meet Misty and Larry. Why don't they come to New England for a book-signing? Interesting that Amberdrake is their favourite, when Vanyel is the universal darling of the Misty universe. *sigh* One note on names and the Great Companion Debate: it's probably only useful to see similarities between Heralds from Vanyel's time and Companions from 'modern' times. I would guess that all the years in between are necessary for memories to fade and the appropriate distance to appear. Any other name similarities are probably pure coincidence: they also appear between different series' and universes, so either it's accidental or Misty resuses names for minor characters to avoid having to think of new ones. If Van, Yfandes, and 'Lendel/Stef were to come back, it'd be Van's turn as a Companion and Yfandes' as a Herald, but I believe they'd still be linked. For Stef/'Lendel, if he came back as a Companion (because he was a Herald last time), Gala would have to be his Herald. But if he can't, because he was repudiated, he could return as anything. However they all return, though, I don't think we'll ever see it. I'm disappointed there won't be a book about Andre. Whoever said he's the best part of the series, I definitely agree. I was so disappointed he wasn't in either of the other two books. Btw, I know this came up before, but what's the real legend of gakis? If some knowledgable person wants to mail an explanation to me privately instead of telling everyone what they already know, I'd be grateful. If someone could tell me how to join the OAM (something I've been trying to do since I joined the MLML), I'd be forever grateful! frothy chocolate sheep to all! -Ambermoon Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 22:48:36 PDT From: "Abigail Laughlin" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 2066 Message-ID: <19990901054837.63122.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> ------------------------------------------------------------ <> I don't know that I'd go that far. They didn't abuse her sexually or physically, all right, but I don't want to think about what I'd be like right now if I'd been raised the way Tania's parents were trying to raise her. Not allowed any friends, not allowed to stretch her imagination--burning her books, for crying out loud! I don't know if that constitutes emotional abuse or not, but I do know that it's enough to slowly crush a spirit. I don't blame Tania one bit for running away. It's not as though she left home *intending* to become a prostitute; she just didn't realize how hard it would be to support herself at her age. I used to think I might be able to manage on my own when I was ridiculously young, so I don't find it much of a stretch that Tania might think she could pull it off. Kids are dumb like that. Not that I'm defending her choice to sell herself, mind; in a similar position, I can't say what I'd have done, but I sincerely doubt it would be that. However, I'd be damned if I'd live in a home with people like Tania's parents were portrayed, if I thought I had another option. Speaking of the SERRAted Edge, how *about* Maclyn? There are some of us who dislike his Whining Mage-ship quite a bit. That's why there is an Order of Amber and Marigold. To defend Vanyel from the well-deserved slings and arrows of his detractors. *grin* BTW, on the topic of reincarnation, someone said that we "know" that Companions come back as heralds (possibly it was Alexia?). I'm not sure this is true, unless Misty stated this explicitly in an interview or somesuch. There certainly is no textevd that conclusively supports this claim. As an exercise, it might be worth coming up with a statement of what would constitute "proof" that Companions can be reincarnated as heralds. He states that there are less Firecats because there are less deceased Sons of the Sun than there are Heralds. Rubrik looks like a stunned ox and Karal thinks the fact that the Companions have been keeping this secret from their Heralds for many reasons. Then there's also Karal who see Florian as a Herald superimposed over his current image, and Van sees Yfandes as she once was. Finally, Florian lets Karal know that he'll be back (whilst appearing as a Herald I believe) when they're on the Moonpaths. -- Paige Proud Mom of Victoria - 4/24/98 Proud to be Outlandish Royal Defender of The Brat There is no "I" in "TEAM"...but there is an "M" and an "E" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1999 13:54:08 -0500 From: Julia Gray To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: reincarnation - storm warning spoiler Message-ID: <37CD7650.43EDE97C-+AT+-oakton.edu> ***** Storm Warning spoiler below********** > Kenneth Allen Hyde wrote: > > > > > > BTW, on the topic of reincarnation, someone said that we "know" that > > Companions come back as heralds (possibly it was Alexia?). Message-ID: <19990901223732.26429.rocketmail-+AT+-web1303.mail.yahoo.com> Hello all! I have two questions here. First off does anyone know how long it takes for a HB book to come out in PB? As a currently unimployed student I really don't have the money to buy HB books, but I can't wait to read the new Owl book. Secondly- while surfing the online auction houses I found a book that was supposidly written by Misty, entitled 'The Queen's Own'. Was this actually a book that is now out of print of what??
