I like Van, but he isn't one of my absolute favorites. I just finished LHM and I have to say it's a little depressing. Van is lonely, mistreated, overworked, and in physical, mental, or emotional pain throughout most of it. His emotional state breaks my heart. And worst of all...you know what's going to happen to him. He keeps dreaming about it. Can somebody explain why this is everybody's favorite series and character? I apologize if this sounds offensive. It is truly not meant to be. I am just curious why everybody likes it so much. I liked LHM, but my favorite is Arrows. I don't know why. Maybe it is because they were my first Misty books. I love them all, I don't dislike any of them, but for me it goes: Arrows, Winds and LHM are tied, BTS, Owl, MageWars, and Storms (with the exception of Oaths which I am just now starting and I'm sure I'll love) On Reincarnation: From what I've read, I think reincarnation does happen. I like the theory that the same Companion and Chosen come back as opposites and one always chooses the other. It does answer the question of how a Companion knows to choose the right Chosen. Like Savil and Kellan/Kerowyn and Sayvel. I read on the list that Skif might be Medren reincarnated. Where did that come from? Does anybody know? LHM is the serie I always return to when I'm a little depressed - which is rather odd, since it's the only serie together with Arrows, that can make me cry every time I read it, and when you have read a serie 50+ times, that is quite hard. I think those two series, but particullar LHM are Misty's best work, since the characters seems so vivid, and you can feel the pain the characters feel, even as they make all the sacrifies they have to. It makes a contrast between their deeds and their feelings so to say. I also think that LHM have the best supporting characters, I can't really think of any serie that have the same range of supporting characters, with the same dept - here I'm of course refering primarely to Lissa and Savil, but also all those other nice supporting people. This didn't really explain anything I guess, but I hope it helps. Kory asked how long between HC and PB books - well, usually it takes 1 year for a popular author to make it to paberback from hardcover, but some authors get a international paberback made before this - even sometimes at the same time as the HC, but this is not published in USA of course, and as far as I know, it haven't happened with a Misty book yet. Someone ( sorry! ) said he/she prefered HC to PB because they looked better on the bookshelves, and because you'll get the books before. Well, speaking as someone whose personal collection of fantasy and sf books are rapidly moving towarts the 2000 mark, I must admit I prefer PB, simply because they take up less space. I would prefer to get the stories before of course, but I simply don't have enough space. Hmmm, need a question I feel, oh yeah - what did people think of The Ship who Searched, written together with Anne McCaffrey? This was my first introduction to Mercedes Lackey and the reason I put her books on my list of books my family could buy for me. I loved it. It was my favorite book in the series, along with the Ship Who Sang. I was slightly disappointed with the ending, I'm not completely sure why. Maybe too quick of a wrap-up: hey presto, everyone's problems solved. I would like to see her do more collaborations with Anne McCaffrey. I think their styles worked well together. > zenhugs to everyone Maybe some zensheep. In a message dated 99-09-02 13:24:58 EDT, Star writes: << I looked this up last night, but of course forgot to bring the book in with me, so this is not exact text evidence. At the end, when Karal is walking the moonpaths and meets with Florian...Florian says that he made his choice, and it should be obvious...Karal agrees that it is and memorizes Florian's face so that he recognizes it in about 10-15 years when he comes strolling into Haven. (I'm not sure if it actually mentioned coming in on 2 feet or not) >> Ok, the exact wording of this is: "Basically, they've made decisions about their destinations, [Van, Stef, and 'Fandes] and they didn't have a lot of time to make sure they got properly placed, so they've already gone on. I can't tell you what they decided, but it's going to be fine. As for me, I've made mine too, but I wasn't so picky. It should be obvious if you think about it, but don't tell any Heralds, all right? "Karal nodded solemnly; Florian's decision *was* obvious, though he doubted that his friend was going to look anything like he did at the moment when he returned into the world. [new paragraph] Then again, maybe he would. Karal branded that face into his memory. If in fifteen or twenty years' time, Karal- or rather, Altra- saw a Herald who looked like this, they would both know who it was." - SB, PB pg. 459. Ok, IMO, this shows that Florian will come back as a Herald. The thing about the first paragraph- this sort of hints that Van and company isn't just going to the Havens, since I don't consider that a "picky" choice, and since they've alread gone on to get "properly placed." All right, my question is, what exactly is Skif's Gift? I've looked over the Arrows and Winds books for the answers, but I can't find them anywhere. The only things that were mentioned were statements to the effect of "Your Gift of Mindspeech isn't that strong, right?" throughout the Arrows and Winds books. Is that his only Gift? It was said in Arrows that gifts don't appear by themselves, that they are always accompanied by other, lesser Gifts, so I thought that Mindspeech was one of his lesser Gifts. I guess you really couldn't call Van my fav charicter (I don't really have one fav), but he is the charicter I relate most to. My own life story is so much like Van's that it's scarey. I guess that's also why I like LHM so much- after reading it I realized that I'm not the only one who has crap like that happen to them. Not of course I'm not a mage, nor do I have a Companion or any of that stuff... But I have been hurt and ostrisized, and I have lost someone I loved to a freak "accident" and blamed myself... I believe the Gift that doesn't appear by itself if empathy. I seem to recall that a Herald usually does have a gift, even if it's a very small one. It's usually awakened by the Companion, or something like that. I'm not positive though because I don't have any books and I can't give any textevd. On Skif, he had the farseeing gift. On page 267, Arrow's Flight, he talks about how Kris was his farseeing teacher, etc. Yeah, and he did have a small mindspeech gift. I need to know about the music thing. Is it legal or not?
