I guess it's time I at least mentioned I'm here. :-) My name is Rachel Schneider and I'm a sophomore in college, my major is psychology, and I've been reading Misty since about the time Winds of Fury came out in hardback. I really wish I could find the woman who recommended her to me way back then, because it was one of the best author recommendations I've ever gotten from anybody. --Rachel (no persona yet...no time to work on one, either ) ------Original Message----- From: songrunner-+AT+-juno.com To: rachelsch-+AT+-mindspring.com Date: Sunday, September 12, 1999 3:12 AM Subject: IT'S OUT!!!!!!!!!!!! >OWLKNIGHT IS OUT!!!!! But be warned they're not anywhere near as friendly as any other ML books I've read. And always read Born to Run first as its a fairly gentle introduction to the series. The other two I've read are a lot less cheerfull, and for a book quite stressful to read. But then they are designed to make you think about some pretty unpleasant things because they DO happen. And on this point, I reply to an earlier posting (hopefully without spoiling the plot at all). To the person who was going on about his not believing or liking Tania. The point is If she had run away due to a major problem such as sexual or physical abuse it would not make you think. Children do run for this reason, which is all the more sad as emotional 'abuse' is quite regularily accidental, from families that don't understand a childs feelings and treat them as extensions of themselves. Most would be horrified to think that this situation could happen. That part was designed to make the reader think about their relationship with there own children. If you are physically/sexually abusing a child you know it, but emotional abuse can be just not realising how much a child NEEDS displays of affection. And to put this in perspective I knew a girl who ran away from home for similar reasons. Luckily her parents had seperated years earlier and she had somewhere to run TO. I have another friend who can't operate in his parents presence, and his succesful parents can't understand how this University educated man becomes totally monosylabic in their presence. Sorry for rambling on, and possibly spoiling your quiet read of this list, but I felt this had to be said, as people need to think and understand with this series or it's message is wasted. Same for Canada. Seeing as we just got Sight in Hardcover I'm assuming a wait of over a year before I can buy Knight. Sorry for rambling on, and possibly spoiling your quiet read of this>list, but I felt this had to be said, as people need to think and understand with this series or it's message is wasted. That would be me The thing about my problem with Tania is that I DON'T think she was realy emotionally abused. I don't think her parents were perfect or particularly wonderful and maybe rather restrictive and possibly a little harsh, but I just don't think they sounded abusive. As mental health charity trustee on the executive board I know a lot about all the form of abuse and know quite well that emotional abuse is a very 'valid' though little recognised form. However, just because a parent does something wrong , does not mean that they are emotionally abusive. I had a friend who ran away for a similar reason, but she didn't run away to sell herself to whoever... That's the bit I have a real problem with- that she would do that. I'm not saying that prostitution is right or wrong , but there are a lot of children who are sexually abuse and would LOVE to have the chance to have not known about sex and that side of human nature, while she threw that gift away. She strikes me as remarkably immature in that way, not to mention that she generally seems pretty stupid to me. The other two characters I could feel a great deal of sympathy and compassion for and I found the contrast with Tania to be overwhelming... Anyway, that's just where I was coming from on that. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 12:25:41 -0500 From: "Carrie MacDonald" To: "Misty List" Subject: Twas a Dark and Stormy Night...
