It isn't Shin'a'in that trained Vanyel. And Savil took him to her friends because even if they couldn't get him to learn control they could contain him. I think that a more likely explanation is that the person who rights the blurb (possibly the editor?) is writing with a specific purpose: to sell the book. They may take licence with the actual plot in order to make the book sound more interesting, or to appeal to a broad audience. In addition, they may simplify or change the plot where it is too complicated to fit within a standard blurb format. I mean, let's face it, the plot to "Magic's Pawn" is pretty complicated and full of details that would guarantee it a very small readership if everything had been in the blurb. For that matter, even if the gay aspect hadn't been mentioned, how exciting would the plot have sounded? "Vanyel was a spoiled child who didn't like to fight. So his father sent him to live with his aunt, where he learned that his dream of being a bard was doomed. When his first relationship ends with his lover's suicide, he tries to kill himself and accidentally activates uncontrolled magic talents. His aunt takes him to some friends to learn some control and he realizes that he has to take responsibility for his own life and the safety of people around him." I know that I wouldn't have bought the book, based on that plot. And I would have missed out on a wonderful series, featuring Misty's two best characters...Savil and Stefen. =) Of course, by that time, I had stopped reading the blurbs on Misty's books, since I just bought them as the came out. =) May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ken.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Nov 1999 20:03:13 EST From: VanyelAshkervon-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: question Message-ID: <0.eeec70c9.2571d951-+AT+-aol.com> Velgarth is the name of the world where the books takes place, I believe.. and if you check www.firebirdarts.com under the Mercedes Lackey section I believe that they sell the coverart there. I've always figured them to be something the publishers wrote in order to sell the books; usually about half of them have inconsistencies (like the one in question here on the list). Point proven, in this case. About the planet they're on... can't really remember, and of course most of my books aren't here with me... And isn't Velgarth the name for all her books set in that world? It would be too easy for me to have actually remembered the name... Um.... oh, the vrondi weren't watching Talia and Kris; I believe in a later book Skif and Nyara were told by Stefan that Yfandes almost "swatted" Talia when her gifts were going rogue... Let's see, what else...someone wrote that noone is born with Gifts; that they grow into them. I disagree; wasn't Vanyel's daughter (I know, shame on me, I can't remember the daughter's name that would be Heir) seeing "colors" around people at a very early age? Weren't Vanyel and her parents watching her very closely? I believe that they ARE born with the Gifts; that they have the potential. But the channels aren't opened until a later age, that's all. Thank you for agreeing with me about Sun and Shadow; I was crushed when I read that Misty has specifically said she won't write it. Thank you also for agreeing with me about there not necessarily being a connection between Van and Lavan despite the repeated term; although that was a very interesting point someone raised about Van's comment in MPrice, and I must look it up. I wonder how the term "Dark Servants" came about anyway; if people thought they were connected, or if it's just a generic term for bad guys we don't know much about (only Vanyel knew about Leareth). The question was raised of the ages of Jisa and Stefen; I'm still interested in the problem of the ages of Elspeth and Darkwind. I won't go through the semi-complex counting game again (read: I'm too lazy to look up all the quotes), but I still haven't got a satisfactory answer. My present opinion is that they both fell into a time warp. In order for Kris and Jeri to be descendents of Vanyel, they couldn't be of Ashkevron blood, because none of his children were raised Ashkevron or given the family name. However, it is true that for them to be contenders for the throne, in other words related to the royal family, then they would be Van's descendents, through Jisa. This does not mean, though, that Orthallen was as well; I believe his relation to Kris was on the other side of the family. Moonstalker mentioned inaccuracies in the blurb for MPawn; it's also incorrect in using the term 'Shin'a'in', when it should be 'Tayledras'. Moral: never trust blurbs. This lets me move into one of my favourite rants: never trust cover art. LHM, for instance: what the heck is with the borders, like the bound woman and random soldier? And Vanyel gets younger with each cover, not older. Moving on, Kethry is a green-eyed redhead, not a blue-eyed blonde! Throughout, what is this temptation to dye Companions' manes and tails pink? And most importantly, gryphons have bird tails! They can't fly with cat tails! Now that I've gotten to the bird tails, end rant. For the record, I still want to see a Van short story book, along the lines of Oathblood. Off-topic, but does anyone know of a way to get out-of-print books other than combing secondhand bookstores? I'm wary of that because generally the books aren't in very good condition. Leading out of that, does anyone by any chance know the order of the Patricia C. Wrede Lyra books? I haven't been on your list long, but I've been around long enough to know that most of the time people sign off with some sort of comment about sheep. I was wondering what the deal was. (: I don't recall anything about sheep in the Velgarth books except that Medren ( I believe ) took the cattle off the Ashkevron land and put in sheep and Van's father was mad at him for it. I could be wrong on that, but that's how I remember sheep being mentioned. Ambermoon: You queried about out-of-print books..contact Firebird. They're very sweet people and they searched and got me the name of an out-of-print distributor when I was looking for one of the Cat Fantastic books that they sell. This was a couple years ago, however, and I've long since lost the name of the distributor. Not much to go off, but I hope it helps a bit. (: Zhai'Helleva!
