It seems his character was caught up in duality, and he sacrificed his life defending what he believed in, but he didn't truly triumph by going home with his love and was lost in the tragedy facing Leareth. A poet named Shankara said that to transcend the world's duality and find true love is what we're here for, but Vanyel's life was dominated by pain and loneliness. If he had won he would have given hope to millions. I agree - I'd like to see more on Shadowdancer and Sunsinger's story; or Vanyel's time on the border. Hope what happened to Diana Tregarde's Investigations doesn't happen to those two ideas. My best wishes to everyone on the mailing list - this is my first effort : hope it shines brightly. Message-ID: <0.7b82832f.257a968c-+AT+-aol.com> Well, this is just a guess but I would say that Darian's 'induction' was different because he wasn't becoming an honorary wingbrother.. he was becoming an actual Tayledras. He didn't need to swear any oaths or anything because he was going to *be* Tayledras.. and the Tayledras don't swear any oaths in order to be Tayledras.. ::shrugs:: Van ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Dec 1999 10:22:37 -0600 From: Amy Trujillo To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: A lurker is ousted... Message-ID: <38493FCD.6DCA748E-+AT+-southwind.net> Heyla listsibs I think the difference between Darian's introduction and Elspeth and Skiffs might have a couple of reasons. One, those two were Herald's with prior Oath's and commitments to Valdemar AND its Gods. They would probably have to do a more elaborate ceremony to satisfy everyone that no oaths were being neglected or countered. This was also before the Storms and the Oath the Tayledras had made to the Star-eyed was still in effect. I'm not sure but I kind of got the impression that the Oath had changed after the Storms, the Tayledras still cleansed and gaurded the land but I don't think its at their Goddess's bidding anymore. They also don't have to guard the old magics from outsiders they are working hand in hand with the Valdemarans and others so the Oaths of secrecy and of helping with the cleansing that would have been required of a Wingsib no longer apply. Also Darian was being flat out adopted, not made an ally. He was considered a member of the family and an integreral part of the Vale. He would be Elder of k'Valdemar Vale in time. I get the impression that Wingsib status was for outsiders who would not be staying within the Vale and working within it all their lives. Elspeth, Skif, Savil, Vanyel and the Shin'a'in who were made Wingsibs went back to their homeland and responsibilities. Darian was a part of the Vale and counted as one of them despite his ties to Valdemar and later Ghost Cat.
