Pouncer asked
Okay. So, a question for historians on list. What
was the strategic mission of the British Army of
the Tommy Atkins period, which afforded that body
the nickname "the thin red line" ?

I believe that it is actually a newspaper quote but I am remembering this
without the
references at hand
The actual quote goes something like " A thin red streak edged with a line of
steel"
and was a description of the Highland Division at the Battle of Sebastopol in
the Illustrated London News
It's one of those quotes that was never actually said like "Play it again
Sam"
If I'm wrong be gentle with me :)
