That is the historical origin of the tilde in [enye]; the sound
was originally written 'nn'. (Compare Portuguese 'nh' or Italian
'gn{i}'. Also compare Spanish [elye], 'll', and [erre], 'rr';
all three are, or were until recently, considered single letters in
the Spanish alphabet.)
