I just read an article in the Seattle Times. It is complaining that
too many children are raised by improper care givers such as
mothers, grandmothers, aunts and friends instead of properly
trained and assigned day care centers. Blech. Can you believe
that this even seems reasonable to some people? <snip>

According to the article, about a third of the people taking state
money for child care are spending it on the "friends and family"
daycare plan. You get the state money, you get the state interest
in where it goes.

The article also said that many of the people involved in this
informal child care thought more training and support would be a
good thing. Just because you have some free time and space
and you're related to or a friend of someone with a small child
does not mean you have any skills in caring for the child.

Heather V.--who did get child care training, including childhood
CPR, lifesaving (swimming), and other emergency info, before
starting babysitting. And who still considers herself substandard
in childcare abilities.
