I suspect that the differences in social models dates back to the
beginning of colonial times. When the American colonies were
first founded, virtually everyone who came over was from the
lower classes. Hardly any of the upper classes came to the New
World. America was seen as a howling wilderness that took lots of
physical work just to survive in. That's not the kind of place
your upper classes wanted to go to live. Visit and explore maybe,
but not settle.

Now after a couple generations the colonies did form their own
upper class, but it was mostly of lower classes moving up. That
set the pattern of social mobility that we have today.
