Depends, sometimes screen readers are allowed for the visually impaired...
Though, given that most ebooks barely are cheaper than the real book
itself (at least the DRM'ed ones), my general process is to buy the
deadtree version, then get the unprotected electronic one easily found
on usenet or other methods. Technically not legal, but less morally
questionable than just taking the electronic version.
This way the author gets the royalty, I have a nice physical edition,
and a portable carryable version. Ebooks are nice during house moves
where all the books are either packed up, in transit, or at the other
place and you really really really want to read a book.
I suspect the same can be said for the audiobook versions - get the
audiobooks, then find unprotected copies or make them yourself (if
possible).
