It happened to me--we lost the baby because they insisted on
trying to leave her in a week longer and I almost died.
There are a number of reasons why this approach isn't common.
First of all in California we have a patient population that is
heavily Catholic and/or Asian (and frequently both).
Second of all, doctors really don't push it, particularly if
there hasn't been a successful pregnancy. The fear of buyer's
remorse with tubals is so severe that many doctors don't even
bring it up.
I had to fight to get my tubes tied after my experience with
eclampsia because I had never had a live birth. Not every woman
experiences a recurrence. I was sure I would because previous
pregnancies (termination, miscarriage) had caused blood pressure
problems as had the Pill. But in order to get the doc to do it I
also had to bring up my mood disorder and the fact that about
three months of pregnancy hormones is all it takes before I start
hearing voices and hallucinating.
If I had to argue to get a ligation with that kind of medical
history, imagine how someone who was less well motivated, less
confident of her medical history and less adept at
manipulating/working the healthcare delivery system would fare.
