I doubt she is oppressed by her husband, religion or society.

Heck, for an ObBujold, what about Cordelia's choice to go through very 
chancy surgery instead of taking the easy way out? Many people are not 
entirely sane around the subject of reproduction. And, after all, if the 
offspring is viable... hasn't the parent fullfilled a major part of its 
role in life?
