Not particularly helpful, but when I read this I flashed on two things.  The
first was the books my mother recorded for me when I was little (and singing
too)-- I had a little Fisher Price tape player (designed for kids, so I
could use it all by myself), and she made tapes of her singing my favorite
songs or reading books, so I could play them before going to sleep.
Apparently, I usually wanted her to do it over and over again, so the tapes
meant she didn't have to sit at my bedside for half an hour singing/reading
the same thing repeatedly.   :)

The second was "how complicated it's all grown" -- I audiocassettes, which a
six-year-old could make and operate; now we have personal microphones,
computer uploads, MP3 vs. other sound formats, CD burning...  so many
options!
