And a whole bunch of other illnesses (eg dysentery , typhoid 
fever and some forms of hepatitis). More lives have been 
saved and general life expectancy increased by chlorinated 
water than any other medical advance in the history of 
mankind, according to some article I read a few years ago. 
I'll try to find a cite if anyone wants to challenge that 
statement!! Chlorination isn't perfect, but it sure beats 
untreated water.
