As Tora no doubt could easily explain, mitochondria are an organelle 
that is nearly it's own cell, as if some time in the distant past, a 
primitive organism just moved in and made itself indispensable. 
Mitochondria have their own DNA completely separate from the DNA of the 
nucleus.  Mitochondrial DNA is inherited exclusively from the mother.
