I have finally gotten around to reading "The Curse of Challion". Yes,
I know it has been out for a number of years, but I work in a Library,
and had built up a fearsome "to read" list when faced with such a
large choice of reading material.
Anyway, after completing the book, I gave it to my mother, who is also
a Bujold Fan to read. She said that she was far to busy knitting, as
my sister is having a baby. However, she said that she would sit and
listen if I read the book out loud whilst she was knitting, as there
was very little of interest on the television. So for the past three
weeks I have been popping up to her house and reading a chapter a
night. Although some nights it has been more than a chapter if the
break comes in a point in the story that was too exciting to leave
it).
I have not read aloud for many years, and so having to read every
word, as printed on the page, has proved to me how badly I read, when
I read in silence. I skip ahead, assume meaning instead of actually
reading a sentence, miss out bits I don't think are important. For
instance, when I read it myself for the first time, I completely
missed the reason that the Bathman threw Cazaril out of his premises
and the significance of his scars when he was falsely accused by Ser
dy Maroc.
Last night I finished the book, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed
the exercise, and we are now awaiting the arrival of "The Paladin of
Souls" from Amazon.
