I remember the snow of '77 because I live about a mile and a half from my
former workplace and only I and two other colleagues in the same department
who then lived in the next block were able to get in to work for three days.
We had high boots (and long coats and hats and gloves [sheepskin, not *fur*
fur]) and walked. It was sort of pleasant walking down a major thoroughfare
and not having to cope with traffic. Cold, though. Public transport was able
to keep the trains going, but the buses couldn't get through snow and the
abandoned cars. Plows weren't able to get to all the side streets for weeks.
The next year the situation was reversed: the train switches froze, but the
streets were plowed successfully. And there was more than a dusting of snow
each weekend in '78 - everyone spent the weekend shoveling and guarding the
parking places each had shoveled out, with actual fisticuffs over poachers
taking places someone else had shoveled.
