Hello. I have been a lurker for a while now, and am taking a chance and
putting in my 2 cents worth.
It is amazing to me to read Lois's blog about dialect, and realize how much
effort went into something that, to me anyway, seems so natural.
I am from southern Ohio originally, now transplanted to Chicago, and the way
the folks spoke in TSK:Beguilement was perfectly natural. Sure, it had a
very rural feel, but it seemed very right. To see how much thought and effort
went into that, well... and here I hoped that someday I might be able to write
something readable.
For me, the fact that so much effort went into just that one aspect of the
book - and that doesn't include the plot, or the characterization, or setting
the scene...Wow. (And even as I write this I know that the aspects of dialect
discussed do effect the characterization and scene, but so subtly that I
normally don't notice that.)
I know I love reading Lois's books, but now I begin to understand why.
Thanks. (And again, muttering as I leave: Wow!)
Claire
