Huh.  Ranma 1/2 is sure popular but I really don't see why anyone
thinks it is good...

I think Ranma 1/2 has some of the vilest gender politics
ever, but then I generally think that about Takahashi Rumiko's
stuff (the only thing of hers I still enjoy is Urusei Yatsura,
and even then it's mostly nostalgia).  Ranma is such a jerk, and
when you meet his family it's easy to see why!  The middle-school
dirty jokes abound.  Ryouga's funny, sure, sometimes (when he's a
pot-bellied pet pig, and he's cuddling in bed with underdressed
teenage girls, I find him much less amusing than when he's lost)

I think the only character I like on that show is the scheming
Nabiki.  Possibly because she's absolutely disinterested in Ranma
:)  I used to watch this show because my roommates loved it, omg.
It was funny for about five-ten minutes and then I had much the
same reaction to it that I have to Benny Hill, which is to say,
in danger of reverse peristalsis.

I guess what I wonder is why people love Ranma, because they
surely do, but I just don't GET it.

My favourite anime/manga series are Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon,
Miracle Girls, Koko wa Greenwood, Ah Megamisama, and Shoujo
Kakumei Utena.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned these or not.  I definitely
strongly prefer shoujo (girls'), jousei (ladies'), shounen ai
(boys' love, in other words gay romance) and yaoi (gay porn)
material to the standard shounen fare, which seems to centre on:

1. giant robots

2. dumb jerks like Ranma, Tenchi and Ataru Moroboshi who are
fought over by really hot girls who in real life would never give
them the time of day

3. explosions.

YMMV, and clearly does :)
