OAV or OVA (Japanese word order is fluid) means "Original Video
Animation." That is, these shows were never broadcast on
Japanese television, but were released as DVD/VCD/VHS/LD
directly. This does not have the negative connotations that
"direct to video" does in the USA, for it doesn't mean that they
thought the film wasn't good enough to draw audiences to
theatres, rather it means that the film was thought to have a
very small and specific audience--fans of a particular manga, for
example, or a particular genre of manga. Many "yaoi" (m/m
erotica marketed to women, not gay men) anime are OAVs. OAVs can
be absolutely awful, pure fanservice, or absolutely wonderful,
pulling out the esoteric stops because they don't have to appeal
to Joe Sixpack.
