Actually it's really annoying when people insinuate I'm doing it
to subvert the canon and that the subtext isn't there. If it
weren't there, I wouldn't write about it.
Every "subversive" thing I've ever done in fanfic--slash or
otherwise--was based in potential I saw in the canon at the time,
although that's not always immediately obvious to people who read
my Goblet-of-Fire era HP stories four years later after
Half-Blood Prince is out.
Sometimes canon disappoints me by turning out to be not nearly as
interesting or culturally subversive as it seemed (the
aforementioned Book Sex, Harry Potter and the Hormone-Brained
Plot) but that's usually when I stop writing and move on to
something else more interesting.
