I don't think I ever spoke to his motives; I informed him that
his opinion was unwelcome because it is. Slash is pretty much
the business of women, and men who enjoy it are welcome, but it's
not their playground any more than Hustler is mine.

Clearly, I disagree with you.

Let me put it this way. Straight men once had the privilege of
having 99% of the world's erotica designed especially for them.
They no longer do, but their erotica is still EVERYWHERE, even in
advertising and convenience stores. The fact that they don't
find mine to their taste is their business. I don't care whether
they like it or not. But I'm not interested in their reasons for
disliking it, particularly if those reasons involve a desire to
return to the standards of 30 years ago when romance was
straight, friendship was same-sex and people who weren't straight
kept their mouths shut about it.

I told him civilly and politely that slash had nothing to do with
him, and that his opinion on the matter was as relevant as my
cat's.

If you think that's ugly, then we have a difference of opinion.
I'm not going to apologise for saying things that I'm not the
least bit sorry I said, because that would be a big fat lie.

Slash is something women (and the occasional gay man, but most of
them prefer a different sort of erotica) do for themselves. If
it bothers other people, they should have no problem avoiding it;
I have never found it without having to go look. Just mentioning
that it exists is not sufficient provocation for a rant to the
effect that slashers have no respect for platonic friendship.
