I think that if you're heterosexual (or exclusively gay/lesbian)
this obviously happens only in relationships with the gender to
which you're attracted, but if you're somewhat bisexual, the
potential's always there if there's any attraction at all.

The thing is, of course, that one makes a choice at some point,
either to pursue a platonic or an erotic connection, and in some
relationships the choice happens once and you never look back
whereas in others, you sort of have to choose every day.

I think slashers glom on, for the most part, to the relationships
where, for whatever reason, it seems like the tension never goes
away, even if the choice appears to be made.

Of course, different people differ as to which relationships
those are, which is why there are tensions in fandoms over
pairings.
