I'd had a little of each of those when I went to Italy, and while
I couldn't converse with Italians or read anything complex, it
did mean I had no trouble with menus, street signs, graffiti &c.
(As I was 14 the graffiti were especially amusing.)

I also amaze my Italian boss with the ability to read Italian
websites :)
