I must confess that I like Jack Whyte's take on the Matter of Britain (_The Sky Stone_ et seq.) But as is well known I have peculiar tastes. I like all of Kay's later stuff that I have managed to read.
Jo Walton's _The King's Peace_, _The King's Name_ and _The Prize in the Game_ are Arthuriana crossed with the _Tain Bo Cualgne_, with female protagonists, and a happier ending. Great stuff.
