Are you sure who attacked whom?  The 30+ raccoons and our 30+ cats  managed 
perfectly peaceful coexistence and shared food for the 10 years that we  lived 
on Hanging Rock Mountain.  One got so tame that she'd join the cats  and me 
for walks in the woods.  I'll admit that the cats thought the 'coons  were crazy 
for eating bread and cookies as well as catfood, but the 'coons would  step 
carefully over a sleeping cat to get to the food pan, and there were never  any 
hostilities on either side.
