My own favourite bit of Templar/Masonic arcana is the book _*The Second Messiah: Templars, the Turin Shroud and the Great Secret of Freemasonry_, by Knight and Lomas. 

Their point of departure from accepted reality is the idea that the face on the Shroud of Turin is that of the tortured Jacques de Molay.
