I don't consider it a duty to 'keep up'. I do try to
answer all posts commenting on my LJ, but generally
speaking, there are great gaps in my reading of my
flist - on which there are many people I know only
slightly and many who don't post much at all. Which is
fine, as there are many who do post, and I love
joining communities.
There are people who are either closer friends, or
simply extraordinarily interesting, whose LJ I go to
often as a matter of course. Them, I keep up with.
I see Livejournal as a sort of magazine library in
which I can browse at will, pursuing whatever
interests me at any given moment. I use it to post
and read fanfic, for contacts and information in
specific fandoms - it works better for TV than books,
but it's all there - lately I've been going on at
length about Torchwood, and people are encouraging me.
It's great fun.

That too. As a sort of wonderful bonus.
It's also a sort of cross-cultural way to discover
that I share more interests with certain people I got
to know here, than just reading Bujold; or just
reading; or just SF.
namaste,
