This is really interesting.

I had the same pronunciation but assumed it came from the idea of a 
party after the fight/victory - putting the bow down and kicking up the 
heels as it were.

Didn't connect with USian pastoral usage. Actually the whole landscape 
thing went right past me; as I didn't find any aspect of it 
recognisable I just assumed an alien world somewhere.
