I took the OT: off this because it is still on topic, just spoilered.

Having grown up in a large, busy farm family, it is also a typical response from an adult towards children fighting. It doesn't matter who started it or why, the adult will finish it. Fair is not a consideration. Obedience and, more importantly, SILENCE followed by work is what matters. It's a part of sibling rivalry that most writers don't address -- deliberately getting a kid sister/brother in trouble because they can. Power games in the young are brutal. >>

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I found it totally believable, both the siblings getting another in trouble as well as the beatings for exaggeration or for asking questions. I was the oldest of 5, also odd man out in many ways.

Fawn wasn't the only odd man. Whit also got pushed around, but not as much as he pushed her. (As a late blooming young man I know the cuts that ran the deepest, I expect the "ugly juice" would be especially hurtful to a girl in her early teens.)

Do you think Clover's only interest in getting Fawn out of the house, or was she already trying to civilize Fletch? There is to much contact among the farmers for the stories not to get out. Violet is certainly not getting a prize. (I think Sunny is as bad as Tien if less civilized.)

I don't know why some people change churches; what difference does it make which one you stay home from?!
