Do you think Clover's only interest in getting Fawn out of the house, or was
she already trying to civilize Fletch? There is to much contact among the
farmers for the stories not to get out. Violet is certainly not getting a
prize. (I think Sunny is as bad as Tien if less civilized.)
M:

Perhaps it started as just getting Fawn out of the house (where Clover might
think she would cause her to be less accepted by Nattie and their mother),
and developed into a liking for Fawn, and a realization that Fletch had some
deficiencies in the way he allowed his sister to be treated and treated her
himself. A smart girl would realize that the way a man treated the women of
his family was probably close to the way he would treat his wife in the
future. He doesn't seem to be teasing Fawn much, but he doesn't stop the other
boys from doing so, doesn't help her, and accuses her of lying.
