I learned by doing live chatting with people online, myself. I was
rather slow, and even hunt-and-peck a bit. (Though I, too, had an
old Apple ][ game where I had to zap things by typing the right keys;
I was never good at the game, but it did give me a baseline of what
to _try_ for.)

Typing slowly is frustrating when you want to have long conversations
with people.

It also makes it darn hard to talk and "twist" when you're an EverQuest I
bard.
