It did sound vaguely familiar and I know how to cheat. After checking  
with the ISFDB, I find "Glossolalia" by Arlan Andrews, Analog SF,  
July 1982 issue. Of course, this was most likely inspired by "A Day  
in the Life of Kelvin Throop" (July 1964 issue of Analog SF). I have  
never heard who was the actual author of that.



Ah ha, yes.  No wonder I couldn't remember the title.
