I would use Krugerrands; I'd also attempt to
accumulate precious stones and/or valuable ores. A
sheet of genuine volcanic obsidian, of whatever size,
that can be made into original jewellery, especially
if presented at a time when such material is
fashionable and isn't commonly available, might be
worth a pretty penny.

Credit chits? However, like the eighteenth century
pirates, they probably grab everything portable on
board. There's always a market somewhere for
everything.
