Most people who do, aren't. It's not something to be ashamed of, but
outside of the south,
a southern accent will tend to cause you to be perceived as lass
intelligent. Not stupid,
but a lazy drawl in most languages often causes the listener to make similar
assumptions.
Of course, I take a perverse pleasure in standing people's assumptions on
end.
To quote Lois, Miles speaking about Bel Thorne: "a low taste for unsettling
people."
Personally, I like southern accents, but the bastardized version we have
around here
(more accurately, the "hick" accent), sets my teeth on edge. Growing up in
a college
town, I have very little accent of any kind except for certain situations (I
do "hick"
as protective camoflauge when around neighbors...).
Have you read much of "The Spirit Ring" yet?
