One's perception of accents can be interesting.  I was raised in 
Wisconsin by parents who were WI natives.  My spouse is from 
tidewater/southside Virginia, and of course has some of the regional 
accent--but I don't perceive it in her.  I have always heard it when 
speaking to her family (mother, siblings, aunts and uncles).  Is it 
just familiarity that makes me deaf to my spouse's regional accent?
