I ran into the New England variation of this when I was teaching at a
business college in Massachusetts. A lot of the students were from
working-class Boston, and when they showed up as freshfolk, they had very
strong Boston accents ("Pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd" doesn't even begin to
cover it.) By the time they graduated, most of them had lost the Boston
accent. It does not convey a good impression in the business world.

I also note that among my friends (most in their 30s and 40s) raised in and
around Boston, those whose parents went to college are much less likely to
have the accent... In my poor husband's case, this is a blessing, as he has
a speech impediment and can be *very* hard to understand... that combined
with a Bahstin accent would be hopeless....
