I don't run a Mac, but my wife dies ... which OS is on your machine? The 
version of OS X on Sandie's eMac includes a firewall.

If you're running OS X, which based on a BSD variant, I don't think 
you'll need to worry about anything getting installed on the machine 
without your knowledge ... you're running as a user, and not with root 
privileges, unless you sign in as root to install something or tweak the 
settings.
