I had a similar situation; my step-grandfather was the only father my
mother ever knew, and, although he didn't adopt her, his name was the
one she used all through school (in the nineteen teens, a child with
a different surname than her parents was virtually unheard of), and
was so much a father to her that her half-brothers and half-sister
didn't even remember, at her mother's funeral, that they were
actually half siblings.
